Context

Systra Canada is currently seeking an experienced Cable Design Lead to support the planning, design, and delivery of Light Rail Transit (LRT) projects across Canada.

Missions/Main Duties

To undertake Cable Design for an LRT Project

Profile/Skills

  • Diploma or degree in Electrical, Civil or Structural Engineering or related discipline;

  • 8+ years’ experience in the design of cable containment (trays, conduits, duct banks) for rail/transit or industrial projects;

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Certified Engineering Technologist with significant experience in selecting cables and their installation and testing for rail transist systems.  
  • Knowledge regarding containment / route design for major infrastructure would be beneficial.
  • knowledge of routing constraints, constructability, maintainability and separation requirements for power, signalling and communications cables;

  • experience coordinating with civil, structural, architectural and systems teams.

     

  • Required Technical Knowledge

    Working knowledge of the following standards:
    • Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC)
    • CSA C22.1 – Canadian Electrical Code, Part I
    • CSA C22.2 – Electrical Equipment Standards, Part II
    • CAN/CSA C22.3 No. 7 – Underground Systems

     

     

  • Applied knowledge in:
    • Cable temperature ratings
    • Ampacity calculations and derating
    • Conductor sizing (AWG)
    • Wet-rated and sunlight-resistant cable requirements
    • Pull box spacing and conduit fill limits
    • Separation requirements for different cable types

     

  • Beneficial Additional Experience
    Conduit, Raceway & Cable Tray Installation Standards:
    • NECA 1 – Good Workmanship in Electrical Construction
    • NECA 101 – Installing Steel Conduits
    • NECA/NEMA 105 – Installing Metal Cable Tray Systems
    • NECA 111 – Installing Non‑Metallic Raceways
    • NEMA VE 1 – Metal Cable Tray Systems

     

  • Fire resistance & smoke propagation:
    • CAN/ULC‑S139
    • UL 2196
    • NFPA 130

     

  • Rail‑specific EMC, safety & communication integrity:
    • EN 50119, EN 50121, EN 50122, EN 50155, EN 50159

     

  • Telecom structured cabling:
    • TIA‑568, TIA‑598, BICSI

     

  • Grounding, bonding, stray current standards:
    • IEEE 80, EN 50162, NACE SP0169

     

  • TPSS & OCS DC traction power cable standards:
    • IEEE 1653 series, AREMA

  • Preference for Light Rail Transit (LRT) experience. Heavy rail and High-Speed rail experience is advantageous.
