Context

The archeologist will bring his contribution to the project in Ontario.

Missions/Main Duties

  • Leads cultural heritage and archaeological assessments along the corridor.
  • Review of previously completed investigations and reporting.
  • Identify data gaps and commitments.
  • Development of the Investigations scope and schedule related to their specialty.
  • Lead the subject matter team tasked to complete DD&I work and reporting.
  • Coordinates Stage 1–4 archaeological work. 
  • Coordinates cultural heritage assessments.
  • Develops an archaeological EMP.
  • Interfaces with regulators and Indigenous communities on heritage and archaeology matters.
  • Integrates mitigation measures into project design and construction planning.
  • Confirmation that requirements and commitments are executed.
  • Conduct, coordinate, and supervise archaeological potential assessments as part of impact studies for major linear infrastructure projects (such as intercity passenger transport, freight transport, tramways, etc.).
  • Oversee diagnostics, surveys, and preventive excavations, in collaboration with technical partners and regulatory authorities.
  • Advise project teams on heritage issues and propose measures for the mitigation or enhancement of archaeological heritage.
  • Participate in project meetings and represent the archaeological discipline to various stakeholders (project owners, government agencies, local authorities).
  • Organize and lead communication and awareness initiatives about archaeological findings for the public and project stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with First Nations as part of archaeological studies.

Profile/Skills

Education: - a bachelor or advanced degree from a recognized university in a field of study related to historical and architectural aspects of Built Heritage Resources and Cultural Heritage Landscapes or Archaeology;

Additional training in project management or heritage regulations would be an asset.

Years of Experience: 7 to 10 years of professional experience, ideally acquired on large-scale projects or in complex environments (linear, urban, or rail projects).

Technical Skills:

  • Experience with similar projects in the Province of Ontario.
  • Proficiency in preventive archaeological excavation, diagnostic, and evaluation methods.
  • Good knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework applicable to archaeological work and heritage management.
  • Ability to write high-quality study reports and to synthesize scientific data.
  • Proficiency in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools and archaeological databases.
  • Experience managing archaeological sites in constrained environments.

  • Independence, thoroughness, and strong organizational skills.
