Context
The Ecology & Natural Heritage Senior Specialist will bring his contribution to the project in Ontario.
Missions/Main Duties
- Review of previously completed investigations and reporting.
- Identify data gaps and commitments.
- Development of the DD&I scope and schedule related to their specialty.
- Lead the subject matter team tasked to complete DD&I work and reporting.
- Incorporation of requirements into design. Confirmation that requirements and commitments are executed.
- Leads assessment and mitigation planning for vegetation, wildlife, species at risk, and natural heritage features.
- Plans and oversees baseline terrestrial and aquatic field investigations.
- Conducts ecological impact assessments and supports route design to minimize impacts to sensitive ecological areas.
- Develops all ecology (terrestrial and aquatic) and natural heritage EMPs.
- Develops monitoring, restoration, and habitat compensation strategies where required.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal and provincial ecological legislation and policies.
- Coordinates agency consultation related to natural heritage approvals.
- Provides ecological input during detailed design and construction, including environmental monitoring and inspection requirements.
- Works closely with Permitting and Approvals Lead to ensure required permits are in line with the overall permitting strategy for the project corridor.
Profile/Skills
Education: - a bachelor or advanced degree from a recognized university in a field of study related to historical and architectural aspects of Built Heritage Resources and Cultural Heritage Landscapes or Archaeology;
Additional training in project management or heritage regulations would be an asset.
Years of Experience: 7 to 10 years of professional experience, ideally acquired on large-scale projects or in complex environments (linear, urban, or rail projects).
Technical Skills:
- Experience with similar projects in the Province of Ontario.
- knowledge of the Species at Risk Act (Canada), the Fisheries Act (Canada), the Endangered Species Act (Ontario), the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act (Ontario) and related policies and regulations; experience in applying for MECP permits and DFO approvals;
- Proficiency in preventive archaeological excavation, diagnostic, and evaluation methods.
- Good knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework applicable to archaeological work and heritage management.
- Ability to write high-quality study reports and to synthesize scientific data.
- Proficiency in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) tools and archaeological databases.
- Experience managing archaeological sites in constrained environments.
