Scheduled for completion by the end of 2023 or beginning of 2024, the Riyadh Metro project features a length of approximately 176 kilometres of railway lines in the Saudi capital, 40% of which is underground, on which electric trains operate without drivers. With six lines and 84 stations, the metro will play a crucial role in easing the city’s road traffic.

A colossal transport project

A huge project, with six fully automatic lines created simultaneously, the Riyadh Metro is Saudi Arabia’s first urban metro network and the largest public transport network in the Middle East.

Since 2013, as part of a consortium with two other engineering firms, SYSTRA has provided project management and the supervision of the construction of Lines 1, 2 and 3 of the Riyadh Metro.

In 2019 SYSTRA signed a contract amendment enabling the teams to stay mobilised on the project into the following decade. The Riyadh Metro represents a transformation for the city’s five million inhabitants, who currently have little in the way of public transport opportunities in Riyadh proper.
