In connection with the construction of light rail tracks at Ishøj Stationsvej and Ishøj Strandvej, an existing stormwater basin near the Vejledalen residential area is being reconstructed, and a new basin is also being established on the opposite property.

Climate adaptation facility as Ishøj’s new landmark

SYSTRA has provided consultancy on solutions for rainwater and wastewater management, as well as climate adaptation, for Ishøj Utility. In this context, SYSTRA has delivered client consultancy for Ishøj Utility and Ishøj Municipality in connection with the design and creation of a new blue-green gateway to the city.

The project focuses on the design due to the basin’s prominent location within the city. The basin will serve as a landmark and a welcoming feature for Ishøj, with the new light rail acting as the gateway to the city.

Pilot project for stormwater treatment

Ishøj Utility faces a particular challenge regarding stormwater treatment. The challenge is that there is no space for traditional treatment basin solutions for stormwater basins with permanent wet volume.

As part of Ishøj Utility’s future strategy for stormwater management, a pilot project has been launched in connection with the establishment of a new basin. The facility is the largest of its kind in the Nordic region.

In this context, SYSTRA has assisted with the preparation of a functional analysis regarding the feasibility of the treatment effect, discharge criteria, and the volume of water that can be treated. The lessons learned from the project will contribute to a subsequent project and serve as the first input for a catalogue of measures to address future requirements for stormwater-related discharges.

With care and innovation, SYSTRA works to protect existing facilities and develop new solutions that are adapted to increasing water volumes and the growing focus on water quality.


In addition to the technical function of the basins—stormwater treatment and local retention—the design also encourages recreation and interaction. The design language is inspired by Ishøj’s coastal location and the local flora and fauna.

Focus on sustainability in project tendering

In connection with the tendering process, the project has integrated sustainability as a central award criterion. SYSTRA, in close dialogue with the client, has focused on optimisation, including the handling and reuse of soil, as well as minimising material transport and fuel consumption.

The contractor, Tscherning, has also been required to document how soil is reused to the greatest extent possible, and how sustainable solutions are continuously recorded and implemented.

Basin 1 is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in 2026.
Basin 2 is expected to go out to tender at the end of 2025.
