Activity Report 2022 33 An environmentally friendly bridge Canada “The third bridge over the Cataraqui River in Kingston (Ontario) is a fine example of a project managed with a keen focus on protecting the environment. The navigable Rideau Canal that it spans has been recognised as a Unesco world heritage site and is home to numerous species of turtle and other wild animals. We have reduced the bridge’s footprint in the water by more than 50% compared with the initial environmental assessment. We have also introduced a fencing system to protect the turtles from the works being carried out, as well as monitoring the site on an ongoing basis.” Seeing the two-wheeled future Australia “Our cycle infrastructure planning solution CyclOps has come a long way since it picked up the Public Prize awarded as part of the SPARK Challenge intrapreneurship programme! Following the project’s incubation which was an opportunity for us to demonstrate the feasibility of our solution CyclOps, the solution was chosen for the first time at the end of 2022 as part of a contract to create new access routes in New Zealand – SYSTRA’s new market – in the Waitemata port area in Auckland. Other clients have shown interest in Europe and Asia. We embarked on this adventure in order to provide organising authorities and mobility operators with an optimum solution, and so that active modes of transport such as cycling continue to increase in popularity. As mobility players and people striving to create a more sustainable world, we view helping communities to plan their transition as an essential component – one that needs to be developed.” Zachary McGain, General Manager, SYSTRA IBT in Canada Aboriginal art leaves its mark in our Sydney offices Australia Rail mobility driving low-carbon aims United Kingdom “Our teams are continuing to modernise and electrify the railway network in eastern England on the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) between York and Leeds. This is one of the six railway projects that will help the UK to achieve net zero – a target that it has set for itself for 2050.” “Saretta Fielding’s painting is called Uwaliko Mariyang Malang, which means ‘Going further together’ in Awabakal. It reflects SYSTRA’s history and its commitment to reconciling with local aboriginal communities in the Torres Strait islands and in the territories occupied by the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters, where we operate.” Nancy Nguyen, Head of Employees & Culture, SYSTRA Australia & New Zealand Stephanie Whiteley, Head of the TRU project, SYSTRA UK & Ireland
