Activity Report 2022 29 For its new tramway, Lyon is placing the emphasis on sustainable design France “Having built lines T4, T5 and T6, we are now building line T10, completing coverage of all the communes within Lyon’s inner suburbs: 8.1 kilometres, 14 stations and a storage siding for 40 tram sets. SYTRAL (Lyon’s public transport syndicate) asked us to sustainably design this project, and to pay particular attention to avoiding heat islands, recovering surface water and optimising energy use at the depot. By applying our sustainable design method, we have been able to provide the client with various options and to deploy the most appropriate technical solutions. For example, domestic hot water for the depot is produced by solar water-heaters, and we have selected a roadway coating with a high albedo coefficient (the measure of solar radiation off the surface) in order to keep heat effects to a minimum.” Vincent Duguay, Director of Urban Projects, SYSTRA France Didier Traube, CEO of SYSTRA France The prowess of the Paris metro France “Work on extending the Paris metro continues: the current lines are being extended to create the hubs which in the future will connect to the Grand Paris Express network. In 2022, we inaugurated two of these extensions: line 4 to the south of Bagneux and line 12 to the north of Aubervilliers, for which we built a 1.7-kilometre long tunnel and two stations. We had to use a liquid nitrogen-based ground freezing method, since the work was done level with the water tables.” Alexis Blanc, Head of the SPARK Challenge intrapreneurship programme SPARK Challenge, idea accelerator and innovation catalyst World “With 68 ideas put forward by 170 daring people, SYSTRA employees have once again this year demonstrated their ability to design innovative, sustainable solutions which meet our clients’ needs, or improve our performance. The winners of the 2022 cohort included: a digital solution for operators of electric bus fleets, drones for inspecting and monitoring work sites, and the use of artificial intelligence for sharing our technical knowledge.”
