Activity Report 2022 19 Arezki Touat, Senior Vice-President of SYSTRA Asia Writing the future of mobility in Southeast Asia Indonesia, Thailand “SYSTRA has been in the region for a very long time – it has been in Indonesia since the second half of the 1970s and in Thailand since the 1980s. Thanks to the expertise that we have acquired throughout the world, we have patiently forged a reputation for ourselves as a trusted partner for both public and private local stakeholders. Nowadays, we are called upon in the very early stages of new projects, helping our clients to design their networks and address the challenges of decarbonising mobility. In Indonesia, for example, we are conducting a study into best practices for public transport infrastructure – involving real-estate developments – for the Jakarta metro operator. And this year, we are also going to be commissioning a three-line overhead metro network based on our famous U-shaped viaduct system, and we have just finished working on a preliminary study with our Japanese partners for a new metro line in Jakarta. In Thailand, alongside four other French companies, we have just signed a cooperation agreement to share our expertise with local stakeholders and help them structure the country’s railway sector as effectively as possible. We also took part in a seminar all about green mobility – an opportunity for us to share our view of decarbonisation as applied to a fleet of buses, with sound achievements in Europe, America and Asia. Finally, since 2018, we have been helping a private concession holder to develop the country’s first high-speed line as part of a public-private partnership.” São Paulo metro Brazil “I have lived in Vila Prudente, near São Paulo, for 62 years, and I was not convinced by the construction of this monorail. My preference was for a traditional underground metro. But we realised that an overhead line was more environmentally friendly, and the monorail was finally built. And it is certain today that it contributes to facilitating the mobility of users in the district.” Osmar Lemes dos Santos, Sâo Paulo resident Uppsala opts for the tramway Sweden “Our study confirmed the merits of recreating a tramway, seventy years after the dismantling of the previous one, with a French-style insertion, from facade to facade, in the university town of Uppsala. The carbon assessment and environmental evaluation of alternative electrification systems helped to convince the authorities. This is a first success for SYSTRA in the Swedish tramway market, which is flourishing, with many cities ready to equip themselves to decarbonise their mobility.” Lukas Lybeck Sköld, Business Area Director Nordic countries “We believe in sustainable design and we are living it. At SYSTRA, the engineering profession really is evolving: a paradigm shift in the way projects are designed means that we can put forward new approaches and provide our clients with new services. We were invited to give a demonstration at the Québec transport association colloquium, where we were able to provide very tangible evidence of what this initiative is doing to meet the challenge posed by decarbonisation, drawing on international and Canadian examples.” Christelle Chichignoud, Group Sustainability Director Giving impetus to the drive to decarbonise the sector Canada
