EXTENSION OF THE EXISTING EXPRESSWAY TO A FOUR-LANE HIGHWAY
The project will extend the existing expressway to a four-lane highway with a speed limit of 110 km/h on the entire 13 km stretch between Allerød S and Hillerød N. The extension of the Hillerød highway is part of the Infrastructure Plan 2035, and the project has an estimated construction cost of almost DKK 0.9 billion.
The project includes total consultancy in connection with the detailed design up to the tender of the construction project, which includes the extension of the Hillerød highway extension between Allerød S and Hillerød N.
SYSTRA is a sub-consultant on the project with NIRAS as the principal consultant. In the collaboration with NIRAS and SYSTRA, the Danish Road Directorate has secured the required competencies and necessary resources for the solution of the project. SYSTRA looks forward to working with the Danish Road Directorate and NIRAS on this exciting project.
IMPROVED TRAFFIC FLOW
SYSTRA’s special contribution to the joint project organization will be in the field of approach systems – i.e. the design of new or reconstruction of existing bridges, the associated connections to the surrounding roads, coordination in relation to railway crossings, planning of construction logistics and traffic safety during construction.

At SYSTRA, we look forward to contributing to better traffic flow and to ensuring that there is also room for a future increase in traffic on the line, partly due to the future super hospital in Hillerød and the surrounding area. When there is more room for cars and the speed limit is raised, traffic will move faster and easier. At the same time, many of the roads that run parallel to the new highway will be relieved.
Eli Skop, Director of Consultancy at SYSTRA
The extension of the highway will also mean fewer accidents, as most serious accidents on the expressway section today typically occur in the form of head-on collisions or accidents related to turning, which can occur on the so-called 2+1 road solution – and these types of accidents do not happen on highways.
THOROUGH CONSIDERATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT
The project also includes the expansion of the 12 existing rainwater basins on the stretch and the creation of two new ones. The basins will collect water and any chemical spills from the road and prevent harmful substances such as oil or chemical spills from ending up in nature.
The project also includes the creation of ecological compensation to counteract possible impact on the surrounding nature, as well as noise barriers on large parts of the stretch.
We look forward to working with NIRAS to contribute to a faster and safer means of transportation on the stretch.
Eli Skop, Director of Consultancy at SYSTRA
The future expanded highway is expected to be ready for use in 2027.
We are very much looking forward to the project and to the upcoming collaboration with the Danish Road Directorate and NIRAS to create the desired accessibility for road users.
