Develop and maintain the service

In collaboration with CBMC Group, SYSTRA has developed the Dynamic2D service, which is a dynamic simulation of flooding in 2D. Dynamic2D can simulate flooding caused by precipitation and storm surges.

project description

Unlike a static map that merely shows the final location of water accumulation, Dynamic2D not only simulates the outcome but also accounts for temporal distribution. This provides users with insights into water flow directions, not just endpoints.

In the context of climate change, only a dynamic model can accurately predict potential damages.

A reliable flood map

A reliable flood map requires the use of a dynamic model. The Danish drainage system is designed to remove rainwater up to the service level, but during heavy rainfall, such as cloudbursts, the drainage system will still remove significant amounts of water. This must be considered when simulating flooding.

In Denmark, the Service Level Order requires the use of dynamic modelling if utilities are to co-finance climate adaptation measures: “In sewered areas, calculations must be made with a dynamic hydraulic model, coupled with a hydrologically adapted elevation model”.

2D hydrodynamic modelling software is based on the Saint-Venant equations for near-horizontal flow and the Implicit finite-difference calculation scheme with a uniform rectangular mesh. Thus, Dynamic 2D contains all the features that are essential in relation to flood modelling, such as :

  • Atmospheric influences (wind and air pressure)
  • Precipitation
  • Evaporation
  • Infiltration
  • Sources and sinks
  • Hydraulic structures (underpasses, spillways, bridges, pumps, etc.)

In addition, Dynamic 2D allows you to see variations in time and place.

Developed specifically for Danish conditions

In collaboration with GBMC Group, SYSTRA has customised the Dynamic2D service for Danish conditions – including Danish regulations and directives. The model automatically retrieves input data from SDFI (Danish Agency for Danish Infrastructure) and other open sources. In addition, the model delivers output in formats that are directly suitable for further analyses in other tools.
