Copenhagen Airport Station is being expanded with two additional platforms and space for more trains. When the Fehmarn Belt connection opens in 2029, an increase in traffic, especially freight trains, is expected on the Øresund Line between northern Scandinavia and the rest of Europe.

Project description

Copenhagen Airport Station is expanding with a new station, New Kastrup Airport Station, which will be located along the existing freight tracks under the current metro station. From the station, a pedestrian bridge will be established over the tracks, providing passengers from the new station access to the airport.

The expansion of Copenhagen Airport Station thus consists of the following main deliveries:

  • Establishment of two new platforms, including necessary adjustments to tracks and switches
  • Safety and environmental upgrade of existing platforms, station facilities, and tunnels for mixed passenger and freight train traffic
  • Establishment of an integrated transfer solution between Terminal 3 and the new platforms in collaboration with Copenhagen Airports A/S

SYSTRA (formerly Atkins Denmark) was the lead consultant for Sund & Bælt (A/S Øresund) in connection with regulatory projects, detailed design, tendering, project follow-up, and supervision. SYSTRA also prepared exemption applications and interface coordination. SYSTRA provided technical consultancy in the disciplines of: railway, installations, civil works and structures, environment and authorities, as well as various interdisciplinary disciplines.

In addition to the new station, changes to the existing infrastructure must be implemented, including directional operation of the track.

We collaborated with M&E Engineering A/S, which, as a sub-consultant, provided advice on the mechanical and electrical installations.
