A new double-track, electrified railway will be constructed from Odense West to Kauslunde east of Middelfart. Spanning approximately 35 km, this new route will offer a more direct path compared to the current rail link across West Funen
Project description
The new railway will enable passenger trains to travel at speeds up to 250 km/h, allowing passengers to travel faster across the western part of Funen. The desire for reduced travel time is part of the so-called hour model, which includes a vision that it should be possible to travel between Odense and Aarhus in one hour.
Common transport corridor
By combining highway and railway into a common transport corridor, noise, barrier effects, and landscape impact are minimized as much as possible. Additionally, the new railway will alleviate pressure on the current railway, enabling better handling of freight and regional passenger train traffic on the existing route
SYSTRA is responsible for the design of the railway and intersecting roads.
SYSTRA is the lead consultant on the project with NIRAS as a subcontractor. The Danish Road Directorate is the client for the overall construction project and the construction authority for the railway project, which is carried out in collaboration with the Danish Railway Authority (Banedanmark). Additionally, Energinet is the construction authority for the relocation of an existing natural gas pipeline along the route.
The total construction project is budgeted at 4.9 billion DKK, and the new railway is expected to be operational by the end of 2028
