The development of Nordhavn includes extending metro line M4 from Orientkaj station. SYSTRA has been commissioned by Metroselskabet to explore route options that enhance urban life and align with Metroselskabet’s climate and environmental objectives.
project description
Extending the metro line from Orientkaj station ensures a rapid and sustainable connection between outer Nordhavn and the rest of Copenhagen’s metro network. SYSTRA was tasked by Metroselskabet to conduct a program study on construction and transportation systems to evaluate potential scenarios for extending the metro line.
SYSTRA is responsible for several areas in connection with the assessment of the different scenarios and variants, including:
- Construction economics and methods
- Environmental effects
- Station concepts
- Geotechnics
- Underground Utility conditions
- Storm surge protection
focus on sustainability
Metroselskabet aims to achieve a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. The goal of this program study is to reduce the CO2 footprint by at least 30% compared to the base scenario, which will significantly reduce the CO2 contribution of metro transportation, as most of the contribution comes from concrete and steel in the construction phase.
SYSTRA has won the mini-tender as part of the framework agreement SYSTRA has with Metroselskabet for civil works and transportation systems.
The upcoming metro line is expected to serve approximately 35,000 residents and 28,000 workplaces, as assumed for Nordhavn in the study by full development in 2062.
The metro line to outer Nordhavn is expected to be completed by 2030.
