Potential for optimizing track layouT
It is the first time that an S-line section – with the new signalling system – is going to be rebuilt.
The project consists of track renewal between Svanemøllen Station and Hillerød Station and a speed upgrade between Hellerup Station and Bernstorffsvej Station as part of a larger speed upgrade on the S-line.
With the renewal of the switches at Hellerup Station, there is potential to optimize the track layout at the station. A preliminary assessment shows that the optimizations will make future operation and maintenance significantly cheaper as a result of simplifying the track layout and reducing the number of switches. In addition, there is a basis for traffic gain due to faster entry and exit at the stations.

The work to renew the tracks on this section is particularly interesting for us at SYSTRA. In addition to being one of the first projects where we closely collaborate with Banedanmark following the new project model, it is also the first renovation on the S-train network after the new CBTC system has been implemented. This means that the work must be closely coordinated with Banedanmark’s CBTC system supplier. We expect our many years of experience with signaling systems and the rollout of CBTC on the S-train network to lead to a more efficient and smooth collaboration, resulting in a better project.

Project Scope
The work primarily takes place at the stations Hellerup, Lyngby, Holte, Allerød, and Gentofte, as well as smaller track works on open stretches. The project includes the replacement of switches at Hellerup, Holte, Allerød, and Gentofte stations, including new track beds, totaling 35 switches, and a speed upgrade between Hellerup and Bernstorffsvej. Additionally, there will be minor track works on open stretches, including rail and sleeper replacement and ballast cleaning. Furthermore, there are related works for drainage, overhead lines, geotechnics, high voltage, and interface with bridge projects along the route.
As advisors for Banedanmark, we at SYSTRA are responsible for detailed design, preparation of tender documents, and project follow-up during execution.
The project is planned to be carried out from 2022 to 2026. The construction phase is scheduled to start in 2025.
