At SYSTRA Denmark, as a sub-consultant to Artelia, we will contribute our expertise in all aspects of rail engineering as one of Denmark’s major infrastructure projects takes shape in Vinge near Frederikssund.

MT Højgaard Denmark has won DSB’s tender for the construction of a new workshop, including a depot area, for driverless S-trains. SYSTRA is part of a strong partnership together with MT Højgaard Denmark (design and build contractor), Artelia, Holm & Grut Architects, M.J. Eriksson, Siemens, and Thing Brandt Landscape.

The project is divided into two main phases, and SYSTRA is involved from start to finish:

  • 2025–2028: The design phase, involving close collaboration among all parties
  • 2028–2031: The construction phase, leading up to completion

The new depot area includes:

  • A 25,000 sqm workshop hall for the maintenance and operation of driverless S-trains
  • Approximately 14 km of track laid with overhead power supply
  • 2 connection tracks to the main line, including an underpass beneath the future motorway
  • Extensive civil works

The project is located in the northern part of Vinge, east of the future motorway, with direct connection to the S-train network and Vinge Station.

SYSTRA’s role

SYSTRA provides consulting and detailed design services for railway engineering and infrastructure solutions that support DSB’s ambitions for sustainable and efficient train operations, with a special focus on driverless systems. Our services include, among others, track design, equipotential bonding, local interlocking systems, and regulatory compliance.

We look forward to a close collaboration with DSB, MT Højgaard Danmark, Artelia, and our other partners on the Vinge project. At the same time, SYSTRA—together with COWI and Parsons in a joint venture—is working to prepare the full automation of the S-train network for driverless S-trains. That is why I am especially pleased that we now have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the new depot, which will play a central role for these very driverless S-trains.

The project is being constructed on a 300,000 sqm site and is expected to be completed in 2031.
