SYSTRA (formerly Atkins) has been chosen as general consultant with NIRAS as sub-consultant when the Danish Road Directorate together with the Danish Railway Agency, construct a new double-track high-speed railway from Odense West to Kauslunde, east of Middelfart.

SHORTER TRAVEL TIME AND DIRECT ALIGNMENT

From Odense West to Kauslunde, the new double-tracked and electrified railway will be built, which will be approx. 35 km long and have a more direct alignment than the current rail link across West Funen.

The new railway will also make it possible for passenger trains to travel at up to 250 km/h, which means that train passengers will be able to travel faster across the western part of Funen.

The desire for a shorter travel time is part of the so-called hourly model, which includes a vision that it should be possible to travel between Odense and Aarhus in one hour.

At SYSTRA, we are very pleased to be able to contribute to this major project in collaboration with NIRAS.

We are very pleased to have been awarded the assignment together with NIRAS to consult on the construction of the new railway across West Funen. It is great to be able to bring into play the knowledge we have from our role as a consultant on the construction of the new double-track railway between Copenhagen-Ringsted and from our activities within digital and sustainable development.

COMMON TRANSPORTATION CORRIDOR

By combining highway and rail in a shared transport corridor, noise, barrier effects and landscape impact are minimized. The new railroad will also relieve pressure on the existing railroad, allowing freight and regional passenger train traffic to run more efficiently on the existing line.

SYSTRA is responsible for the design of the railway and the intersecting roads, and the Danish Road Directorate is the developer of the overall construction project and the construction authority for the railway project, which is carried out in collaboration with the Danish Road Directorate. In addition, Energinet is the construction authority for the re-routing of an existing natural gas pipeline on the line.

The total construction project is budgeted at DKK 4.9 billion and is expected to be operational by the end of 2028.
