The future increase in train traffic must be handled appropriately, and passengers must be able to travel between Copenhagen and Odense in one hour. This requires a capacity expansion and speed upgrade at Ringsted, which SYSTRA is advising Banedanmark on.

Ringsted has been a central rail junction in Denmark for many years. Here, the lines from Roskilde and Køge split and merge into the lines towards Odense and Næstved, respectively. With the new line from Copenhagen via Køge, the junction has become even larger, as the line from Køge now also merges and splits in Ringsted with the old line from Roskilde. In addition, with the opening of the Fehmarnbelt link, not only more passenger trains are expected, but also an increased number of freight trains traveling between Germany and Sweden via Ringsted.

Ringsted is thus of enormous importance for traffic flow and is also a bottleneck in terms of being able to run more trains on the rail network than is possible today. As the infrastructure at Ringsted is currently designed, trains must cross each other at-grade and cannot optimally pass Ringsted Station.

Being part of the solution for the railway junction in Ringsted is exactly the kind of job we are best at in SYSTRA. The task requires solid experience in finding innovative solutions to complex technical and traffic challenges. With SYSTRA’s strong railway technical environment, this is the kind of task we find really exciting – and we look forward to working with Banedanmark’s skilled project team.

Per Lindholm Larsen, Director of the RAIL department at SYSTRA Denmark

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT

The project includes several proposed solutions for an interchange construction east of Ringsted, where a simple interchange containing one double-track bridge and a conflict-free solution where all at-grade crossings are eliminated must be investigated. In addition, there will be a speed upgrade through Ringsted Station, which requires rebuilding and upgrading of tracks, bridges, platforms, catenary systems, etc. as well as adjustments to the track layout to achieve better capacity at the station. A speed upgrade between Ringsted and Fjenneslev from 180 km/h to 200 km/h will also need to be carried out as part of the project.

SYSTRA is responsible for designing the infrastructure to enable a maximum travel time of one hour between Copenhagen and Odense, as well as preparing project proposals, environmental impact assessment, construction estimates and visualizations of the identified solutions for the establishment of a level-free interchange east of Ringsted and for the speed upgrade through Ringsted Station and the section Ringsted – Fjenneslev. For the investigated variants of an eastern interchange and the speed upgrades, the impacts of timetable proposals, traffic model calculations, assessment of punctuality effect and socio-economic calculations must also be carried out.

The total construction budget is budgeted at DKK 1,622 million DKK based on the feasibility study. The project is in the programme phase, and the job includes technical advice and assistance for the completion of the NAB Phase 2 study in this phase. The study will result in the delivery of a basis for decision-making to the signatory parties to the agreement at the end of 2025.
