In SYSTRA's Track and Infrastructure department, specialist David Lopez Valero has developed a script that reduces the calculation time for curved turnouts from two weeks to a few seconds.

While calculating straight turnouts is relatively straightforward, curved turnouts present significant challenges. Not only do they require maintenance due to the additional curvature, which increases wear, but the design process is also more complicated. A process that often can take up to two weeks. But not anymore. That was before David Lopez Valero, through Bentley’s OpenRail program, programmed a method to automate the cumbersome manual calculations. Now, it takes only a few seconds to design a curved turnout.

David, who has a background as a software developer, spent 70 hours developing the script, which now saves him and his colleagues many hours of work. David believes that there is also great potential for digital optimization of other parts of the design process, and we at SYSTRA welcome this.

One of the best things about working at SYSTRA is that I have the space to develop new ideas and innovative processes.
