At the heart of the Saudi government’s Vision 2030 plan, the AlUla tramway project aims to enhance an important cultural hub characterized by its rich architectural, historical and archaeological heritage, as well as stunning natural scenery.

CONNECTING THE KINGDOM’S HERITAGE
The AlUla tramway project is a key component of Vision 2030, which aims to develop the Kingdom’s cultural and tourism offerings. It is part of a master plan to enhance an important cultural, agricultural, and residential area while protecting its environmental treasures.
For this project, SYSTRA is mobilizing its expertise in the fields of infrastructure, landscape and architecture, stations, workshops/depots, track, rolling stock and systems.
The scope of the contract also includes drawing up the environmental and social impact assessment and preparing the technical tender documents. The study concerns the northern alignment, i.e. approximately 21km from the historic AlUla Central Hijaz station to the Hegra site in the north.
A JOURNEY THROUGH HISTORY
The tramway will ultimately carry visitors 50 kilometers along an unprecedented journey through time, enhancing access to the region’s wealth of heritage sites while simultaneously providing climate-friendly daily transport for local communities.
Riders will have access to a variety of stations that enable them to discover the Kingdom’s historical gems and civilizations from the Old City to the cultural oasis of Hegra, with stops to explore Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and Nabatean culture along the way.
The tramway will serve the area’s main archaeological sites and future tourist destinations undergoing restructuring or development. The study corridor includes the entire rail system right-of-way, including the platforms, 15 stations and the depot.
Phase 1: Northern alignment (21 km): The main corridor will run from the historic AlUla-Central Hijaz railway station to Hegra. It will serve the area’s major archaeological sites and future tourist destinations.
Phase 2: Southern extension to the airport running 28-33 km through central AlUla, which will position the city as a regional transport hub.
AN INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE PROJECT
With its extensive experience in tramways, the SYSTRA Group is providing the RCU with expertise in the design and operation of state-of-the-art tramway networks, offering an innovative and sustainable mobility solution capable of enhancing the attractiveness of this region.
