My role at SYSTRA<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

As the Discipline Lead\u00a0(Water\u00a0Resources)\u00a0I effectively manage and lead the Water team\u00a0here at SYSTRA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u00a0ensure\u00a0quality of delivery,\u00a0resource management, recruitment, business development and most importantly,\u00a0collaboration with the other parts of the company\u00a0–\u00a0all whilst\u00a0ensuring we\u00a0put the client at\u00a0the centre of what we do.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My career journey<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I started\u00a0out as a\u00a0Civil\u00a0Engineering\u00a0Technician completing a Higher National Certificate\u00a0at Hereford & Worcester County Council\u00a0–\u00a0the department was privatised which moved me\u00a0into the private sector. I moved through various teams,\u00a0gaining a wide\u00a0breadth\u00a0of experience\u00a0from\u00a0Public\u00a0Rights\u00a0of\u00a0Way,\u00a0school\u00a0playgrounds,\u00a0and\u00a0small roads to major bypass\u00a0designs.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I have spent time on site supervising contractors, delivering waste to energy schemes and,\u00a0over the last decade,\u00a0really focusing on the\u00a0water sector\u00a0in regards\u00a0to\u00a0flood risk management and regulated water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When did you realise this was the career path for you?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0a child\u00a0growing up who\u00a0said\u00a0\u201cI want to be a Civil Engineer\u201d.\u00a0I\u00a0actually\u00a0grew\u00a0up on a farm,\u00a0and in that\u00a0environment\u00a0you build and fix things yourself\u00a0–\u00a0you become a problem solver. My parents\u00a0said I could\u00a0take on the farm as long as I got a trade first.\u00a0My father was a qualified electrician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Upon leaving school I had\u00a0the\u00a0option\u00a0to continue full time education or\u00a0undertake\u00a0a training scheme with the local authority.\u00a0I took on\u00a0the training scheme\u00a0and never looked back.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0now\u00a0really\u00a0proud\u00a0to\u00a0travel\u00a0around the area and see things I\u00a0played\u00a0a part\u00a0in\u00a0designing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you got any words of wisdom for someone starting out in a similar role?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Say\u00a0\u2018yes\u2019.\u00a0I have always been the sort of person to say yes to management asking me to do something. This has\u00a0always\u00a0opened more doors than it\u00a0has\u00a0closed.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not what you\u00a0do<\/strong>\u00a0that you regret the most,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0what you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0do<\/strong>. Be agile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As the great\u00a0author and public speaker,\u00a0Simon Sinek,\u00a0would say\u00a0–\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0be afraid to be the\u00a0\u2018stupidest person\u2019\u00a0in the room.\u00a0Ask,\u00a0ask\u00a0and ask again. You\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0be\u00a0alone\u00a0–\u00a0but you might be the brave one to\u00a0put yourself out there.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does SYSTRA stand out from the rest as a great place to work?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

At this point of my\u00a0career,\u00a0I have worked at a few places,\u00a0but SYSTRA\u00a0is different\u00a0–\u00a0good different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\u00a0large\u00a0enough to be on the biggest\u00a0projects but\u00a0still feels close knit.\u00a0\u00a0At SYSTRA,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not\u00a0\u2018just another\u00a0number\u2019,\u00a0and\u00a0everyone is able to\u00a0interact with senior\u00a0leadership\u00a0directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are good values which people adhere too, clear direction\u00a0from the top down,\u00a0and everyone\u2019s efforts are focused\u00a0in\u00a0the same direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Me and my team\u00a0interact with global delivery teams\u00a0regularly,\u00a0and\u00a0with our headquarters being in France,\u00a0there is a certain\u00a0je ne\u00a0sais\u00a0quoi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With such power in diversity, what unique perspective do you bring to the table?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u00a0definitely\u00a0recognise\u00a0and\u00a0support\u00a0the benefits\u00a0and innovation\u00a0that diversity, however you wish to define it, brings to projects\u00a0and\u00a0workplace\u00a0environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you have a team full of the same\u00a0people,\u00a0then you\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0get the best results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where is the place that has inspired you the most?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My wife and I are both in the same business and we travel quite a lot. The one place we always talk about is Iceland. The environmental\u00a0credentials\u00a0are incredible;\u00a0the use of natural resources is inspiring.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0clean and you can see how\u00a0proud\u00a0the community is.\u00a0The geology and natural environment\u00a0is\u00a0so powerful,\u00a0it\u00a0really\u00a0is something to behold\u00a0–\u00a0and\u00a0a very short\u00a0flight\u00a0away from the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does true sustainability really mean to you?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Being a Fellow Chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), sustainability is at the heart of my work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I have seen first-hand the impact of flooding on communities, and the fact we are seeing climate change within a generation is mind blowing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We have to think holistically about sustainability, with the three recognised pillars being economic, environmental and social. We must focus on all three of these areas to improve the quality of people\u2019s lives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Everything we do\u00a0impacts\u00a0the lives of our\u00a0clients\u2019\u00a0stakeholders,\u00a0so we need to ensure the\u00a0impact\u00a0is positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would a green future<\/em> look like?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

A \u2018green\u2019 future is a great goal, but only half of what we need. We need to talk about a blue and green future.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We should consider a blue and green future as concepts that are intertwined strategies focused on sustainable development. A blue future emphasises the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources for sustainable economic growth, while a green future focuses on broader environmental sustainability, including terrestrial resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Approximately 50% – 80% of our oxygen comes from the ocean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I would\u00a0surmise\u00a0that a green future is one based on a circular economy where\u00a0we can live\u00a0neutrally\u00a0within our environment as a minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you look after your wellbeing outside of work?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Well, if you ask my doctor, probably not as well as I should; but I try to break it into two parts – physical and mental. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Physically, me and my wife walk a lot. We have a very demanding dog that gets us out of the house at least twice a day. I also do some resistance exercise but could do more, and I certainly could stretch more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Mentally, and this links back to being a farmer, I have taken on gardening as a mindfulness exercise. This has a physical element to it as well, as I do garden with high energy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It gives\u00a0me pleasure creating something with my hands.\u00a0While\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0doing it,\u00a0I am totally focused on the task in front of me and at the end of it I can see something I have created.\u00a0And there is always something to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you could spend your lunchbreak with someone you really admire, who would you choose?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are so many people to have lunch with, so I\u2019m restricting this to those who are living. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Professionally, it would have to be Simon Sinek. I find his way of thinking so logical. He explains things in a simple way that is easy to apply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Another person\u00a0would have to be my wife (but\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0tell her).\u00a0Seeing the\u00a0way\u00a0she works, her insights and instincts,\u00a0is\u00a0amazing.\u00a0Fortunately,\u00a0I get to have dinner with her most nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you had to pick, which mode of transport would you use for the rest of your life?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s such a hard question. I\u2019m a very practical person who applies the most suitable tool to a problem. I do love to fly, as a passenger. Me and my wife have talked in the past about moving to America and having visited there regularly you see people having their own planes. That would be cool, but not very sustainable, or practical for doing the weekly shop down the road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
