My role at SYSTRA<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I am part of the first cohort of the PlanBEE Rail: Project Management Apprenticeship scheme – I had the pleasure of being introduced to SYSTRA for my first placement on the programme. My time with SYSTRA has been invaluable \u2013 providing me with practical insights and hands-on involvement in the dynamic world of design, engineering and consultancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

More specifically during my time here, I have been exposed to the immense and diverse world of the Transpennine Route Upgrade and have worked within the TRU East Alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve had the privilege of observing every technical discipline; experienced first-hand major project reviews and the work package manager role, worked closely with disciplines to complete lookaheads to update programme planners and investigated KRAs and KPIs to support business objectives. On top of this, I\u2019ve worked with internal stakeholders to collate project deliverables and cost estimates, submitted change requests to the Alliance, shadowed project kick-offs, and had the opportunity to shadow and be mentored by real technical experts. It\u2019s almost impossible to list everything I\u2019ve done during my apprenticeship placement at SYSTRA – the list really does go on.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Why I chose an apprenticeship<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I chose an apprenticeship in the rail industry due to my interest in project management and my curiosity for infrastructure. Transitioning from my previous career as a jewellery retail manager and having already attended university, I found the apprenticeship route offered the ideal combination of hands-on learning and academic development. I knew I wanted to experience the reality of the working project management world as soon as I could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Prior to joining the PlanBEE scheme, I had by chance been networking with a Senior Project Manager. They highlighted the importance and value of gaining practical experience in the industry to support the development of a career in project management \u2013 which reinforced the choice I later made. The apprenticeship approach also aligns better with my learning style compared to traditional university pathways – it was a clear winner in terms of my next steps in making a career change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How have your technical skills developed throughout your apprenticeship?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

During my apprenticeship my technical skills have advanced considerably. I have gained hands-on experience with industry-standard software and established an excellent foundation in IT infrastructure. My communication skills have strengthened, allowing me to effectively understand and convey information in both technical and non-technical terms. I have also acquired an understanding of planning and budgeting, quality assurance and stakeholder management. These skills have enhanced my ability to comprehend data and streamline project processes more proficiently. In turn, this enabled me to better understand the role of a project manager whilst also building technical proficiency. The best part is that the meetings I am involved in no longer sound like they\u2019re in another language!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How have you grown personally through doing an apprenticeship?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

To summarise this in a few words will be challenging\u2026 I’ve grown by embracing newness and learning from diverse experiences. Both SYSTRA and the PlanBEE programme have taught me resilience, adaptability and the importance of continuous development. All these elements have been crucial in navigating the dynamic environment of the rail industry and project management, as well as making the most of the powerhouse that is SYSTRA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you offer to someone who\u2019s unsure if an apprenticeship is right for them?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I would advise them to consider their career goals alongside the opportunities a programme and company like SYSTRA can offer in terms of skill development, networking and being present in a real environment. It’s a valuable stepping stone that provides practical experience and exposure to industry practices, which can be pivotal in shaping one’s career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

SYSTRA stands out due to its commitment to innovation, safety and its collaborative work culture. The opportunity to work on impactful projects and the support for professional development make it an exceptional place to grow and contribute meaningfully. I have gained an incredible amount professionally and personally, and made some excellent connections with leading experts. What\u2019s your favourite thing about your job right now?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My favourite aspect of my job is the opportunity to lead and collaborate on diverse projects. The dynamic nature of project management keeps me excited, engaged and motivated. As I continuously learn new strategies to achieve project goals, I can sense my skills really developing holistically, which is an excellent position to be in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diversity is powerful. What unique perspective do you offer as an apprentice?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I came to SYSTRA as a jewellery retail manager with a history in choreography and dance. I bring a fresh perspective and a willingness to embrace new technologies and methodologies. My unique background has equipped me with strong interpersonal skills, fresh approaches and a keen eye for productivity. This enables me to approach challenges with an innovative mindset and a focus on efficiency, which often results in a successful outcome for all involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would an entirely green future look like? How should our industry contribute?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

An entirely green future would prioritise sustainable practices, renewable energy and minimal environmental impact. Our industry can contribute by designing eco-friendly transportation systems, reducing carbon footprints and integrating green technologies into infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your next big career goal?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

My next big career goal is to become a certified Project Manager, leading large-scale projects that drive innovation with people and sustainability at its core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
