My role at SYSTRA<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In my role as a Digital Engineer Apprentice within the Highways team, I am responsible for providing technical support to various project teams, focusing on specialist and technical tasks as directed by the lead engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, I support the production of engineering deliverables, utilising various relevant design tools and software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The overall objective and goal of my position is to ensure that our highway infrastructure projects are safe and compliant, and to streamline the process of deliverables.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Why I chose an apprenticeship<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I chose an apprenticeship because it seemed like the best route to pursue with regards to my interest in engineering. I actually previously did an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. My current apprenticeship programme perfectly aligns with my aspirations to be directly involved with impactful projects that shape future transportation systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I evaluated other routes, like traditional job roles or further academic specialisation, but they didn\u2019t seem to offer the hands-on experience and industry-specific knowledge that SYSTRA\u2019s programme committed to. The practical, project-based approach resonated with my learning style and career goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How have your technical skills developed throughout your apprenticeship?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The learning curve I experienced when I joined SYSTRA was quite steep – but in the best way. Throughout my apprenticeship, I’ve experienced growth in my technical skills, particularly in areas directly relevant to civil engineering or highways. For instance, my proficiency in engineering software like OpenRoads and MicroStation has significantly improved. I’ve been able to apply these tools in real-world project simulations, enhancing my understanding of design and planning processes. My understanding of industry-specific regulations and standards has also deepened. This proved vital during a project where we had to ensure that our design complied with the latest safety and environmental regulations. My apprenticeship has also improved my technical communication skills, both in documenting my work and in presenting ideas to colleagues and supervisors. Collaborating on projects with a diverse team has not only developed my ability to work in a team, but it has also allowed me to learn through being exposed to different perspectives and approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How have you grown personally through doing an apprenticeship?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Since starting my apprenticeship, I have experienced significant personal growth. My confidence has greatly increased, particularly as I’ve navigated complex tasks and new challenges. I’ve developed resilience and adaptability, learning to manage unexpected changes and setbacks effectively. My communication skills have also improved through regular interactions with team members and mentors, enhancing my ability to express ideas clearly and work well with others. Overall, this apprenticeship has been instrumental in shaping me into a confident, adaptable and ethically minded professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What advice would you offer to someone who\u2019s unsure if an apprenticeship is right for them?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Consider your career goals and learning preferences. If practical, hands-on experience, and earning whilst you learn sounds appealing to you, an apprenticeship might be your perfect choice. For deeper academic study and specialisation, going to university might be better. Research all your options, and speak with people that have taken different paths and can offer their personal insights. Remember to weigh up the financial aspects too. Ultimately, choose the path that aligns with your aspirations and feels right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does SYSTRA stand out as a great place to work?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As a Level 3 apprentice at SYSTRA, I appreciate the exciting hands-on experience I get to have with innovative transport projects aligning with my passion for sustainable solutions. The diverse and inclusive culture fosters a supportive learning environment, whilst the focus on professional development and work-life balance is great too. SYSTRA’s visionary leadership and global presence truly enriches my apprenticeship experience, making it an ideal workplace for professional and personal development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s your favourite thing about your job right now?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I love the people that I work with – the Signature Team. Being an apprentice at a global and diverse company like SYSTRA allows me the privilege of working with people from different backgrounds and nationalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diversity is powerful. What unique perspective do you offer as an apprentice?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

As an apprentice at SYSTRA, I bring a unique viewpoint that isn\u2019t influenced by industry norms. This fresh outlook enables me to challenge traditional methods and propose innovative solutions. My eagerness to explore new ideas, even if they don’t always succeed, is vital for driving innovation in transport engineering. It’s about thinking differently and being open to learning, which not only aids my own growth but also contributes positively to the team and the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would an entirely green future look like? How should our industry contribute?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

For me an entirely green future would encompass civil engineering and transportation being fundamentally transformed to prioritise sustainability and eco-friendliness. Transportation would shift towards the electrification of vehicles, enhancement of public transit systems, promotion of active transportation (like cycling and walking), development of sustainable fuel alternatives, and investment in high-speed rail networks. The industry can contribute to this future through innovation and research in sustainable practices; education and training in green technologies; advocacy for supportive policies; collaboration for integrated urban planning; and adherence to sustainability metrics and standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can spend your lunchbreak with anyone you admire – who would you choose?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It would have to be Larry Fink – CEO of Blackrock. I think it would be interesting to hear in person how he transformed Blackrock into being the largest asset manager in the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is your next big career goal?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

My next big career goal is to continue my studies through a Level 6 degree apprenticeship, after I complete my Level 3. I\u2019d also love to be involved in another major worldwide project with SYSTRA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What excites you about your career future?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

I am genuinely excited to be a part of the SYSTRA team – after joining and seeing the rapid growth of SYSTRA, I’m looking forward to seeing how I will grow within the company. The potential for career advancement within a dynamic and challenging environment is something I find really motivating. I am particularly keen on taking up opportunities whereby I can contribute on impactful projects and see the tangible results of my work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
