But it can also be complex,\u00a0confusing\u00a0and inaccessible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To truly harness the benefits of a varied and multi-input data stream\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0crucial to present it in a format that users can derive clear outputs from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s\u00a0why SYSTRA\u2019s Data Science Team has worked so diligently to create an effective and efficient dashboard\u00a0framework\u00a0aimed at supporting decision makers and strategy planners.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport for the North\u2019s (TfN)\u00a0visualisation framework has been a collaborative effort to deliver a package that can be rolled out universally and help\u00a0showcase\u00a0key opportunities for infrastructure improvements across communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-the-visualisation-framework\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the\u00a0visualisation\u00a0framework?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The framework is a full-stack, open-source and low-cost dashboarding solution built entirely from scratch. Rather than relying on expensive proprietary enterprise software, our teams developed a bespoke system designed specifically for the nuanced needs of transport and infrastructure planning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology stack includes:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A custom React library (vis-core) that serves as the template for building applications, featuring componentry for interactive charting and map-based visualisations using vector tiles and the\u00a0maplibre-gl\u00a0library.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A .NET web API, which is currently being translated into a core library and template for easy deployment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A PostgreSQL database build from the ground up to work directly with the framework out of the box, complete with built-in authorisation and vector tile capabilities.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Python-driven\u00a0data load processes.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the framework is built on open-source technology, it offers exceptional value for public sector clients by avoiding recurring enterprise licensing fees. It also allows for a high degree of customisability for clients with specific requirements. This solves the common pain points of building consistent visualisations and\u00a0providing\u00a0a seamless web-based access to stakeholders across\u00a0different locations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clients can visualise complex scenarios spatially and over time. This includes exploring rail and highway modelling outputs, projecting Electric Vehicle (EV)\u00a0uptake, or\u00a0examining the impacts of different policy scenarios for business cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comparatively, it means\u00a0very low\u00a0cost to deploy whilst outputting\u00a0high quality\u00a0visuals to the web.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-how-was-the-visualisation-created\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How was the visualisation created?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A significant challenge in creating these visualisations is the raw data itself. It is produced in countless ways, arriving in various file formats, from\u00a0disparate\u00a0sources, and with varying levels of normalisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our\u00a0Data Science Team, the primary task was developing consistent schemas that minimise repetition, optimise performance and maintainability, and\u00a0establish\u00a0robust long-term processes upstream.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clear example of this Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) process was our work on the Strategic Analysis apps for the Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) business case. Data was flowing in from\u00a0a large number of\u00a0distinct analytical processes, workstreams and analysts. They were paying high\u00a0licence\u00a0fees for third-party tools that lacked the flexibility of an in-house solution and did not have the right mix of capabilities to suit their spatial and transport data. As a public sector body,\u00a0TfN\u00a0wanted to generate long-term value from their investment, rather than paying rent for software.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SYSTRA developed the\u00a0Visualisation\u00a0Framework from the ground up, but it is fundamentally\u00a0TfN\u2019s\u00a0platform. We worked\u00a0hand-in-hand\u00a0with\u00a0TfN\u00a0throughout the process. This collaborative approach focused on upskilling their internal team to\u00a0maximise\u00a0the framework\u2019s potential and build the in-house\u00a0expertise\u00a0necessary to\u00a0maintain\u00a0and develop the tools long term.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platform fits seamlessly into the\u00a0TfN\u00a0Offer, a tiered system providing, at its heart, self-serve access to\u00a0TfN\u2019s\u00a0data,\u00a0analytics\u00a0and tooling.\u00a0The\u00a0rollout empowers users to conduct their own analysis across a suite of bespoke tools:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Climate Vulnerability Tool (CVT) &#8212; helps LADs assess the vulnerability of road and rail networks to climatic risks, meeting Green Book climate change requirements for local transport plans\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) Strategic Analysis \u2013\u00a0showcases\u00a0business case evidence,\u00a0visualising\u00a0user benefits, wider economic impacts, air quality, noise, severance, and accessibility impacts across different strategic rail investment scenarios\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI)\u00a0Visualiser\u00a0(link\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evci-visualiser.transportforthenorth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/evci-visualiser.transportforthenorth.com\/)<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 projects EV charging requirements,\u00a0likely demand, CO2\u00a0savings\u00a0and potential charging sites under different scenarios for Sub-National Transport Bodies (STBs) across England.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transport-Related Social Exclusion (TRSE) (link\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trse.transportforthenorth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/trse.transportforthenorth.com\/)<\/a>\u00a0and Severance tools (<a href=\"https:\/\/severance.transportforthenorth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/severance.transportforthenorth.com\/)<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 outline the vulnerability of specific areas to social exclusion and highlight severance risks\u00a0regarding\u00a0access to education,\u00a0health\u00a0and key services.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strategic Rail \u2013 pulls together metrics about the rail network, including accessibility, facilities, loadings,\u00a0performance\u00a0and congestion\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Transport Model\u00a0Visualisation\u00a0(NoHAM,\u00a0NoRMS) &#8211; intended for\u00a0modellers\u00a0and other specialists, these tools\u00a0visualise\u00a0highway and rail model inputs and outputs, enabling model QA and the direct comparison of different scenarios.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-what-is-the-future-development-of-data-and-the-visualisation-framework\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the future development of data and the visualisation\u00a0framework?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary target audience for this approach includes those local and regional bodies (e.g. Local Authorities, Combined\u00a0Authorities\u00a0and other public sector organisations) where cost\u00a0control\u00a0and data ownership are\u00a0particular priorities. The framework offers a transition away from static reports and spreadsheets, toward interactive, shareable web dashboards they can manage themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SYSTRA provides the\u00a0expertise\u00a0in understanding data architecture and how it all fits together.
