{"id":16485,"date":"2024-07-02T18:12:09","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T17:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/?post_type=expert_insights&#038;p=16485"},"modified":"2024-07-18T15:58:37","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T14:58:37","slug":"supporting-pathways-to-develop-the-next-generation-of-geospatial-specialists","status":"publish","type":"expert_insights","link":"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/expert_insights\/supporting-pathways-to-develop-the-next-generation-of-geospatial-specialists\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting pathways to develop the next generation of geospatial specialists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-light-eggplant-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size\"><strong>It\u2019s estimated that the geospatial sector will be worth \u00a39bn by 2027, but <a href=\"https:\/\/thedatacity.com\/rtics\/geospatial-economy-rtic0008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis suggests<\/a> there\u2019s currently a skills shortage which could prevent these benefits from being realised.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/locationdatascotland.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Location Data Scotland<\/a> (LDS) is a community established with the aim of unlocking geospatial skills and enabling economic growth in collaboration with industry and academia, alongside the public and third sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I recently attended \u2018Developing the Geospatial Skills Agenda\u2019, an industry event held by LDS at the Scottish Government\u2019s Victoria Quay building in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry event was led by the University of Edinburgh and Fife College, who are developing the first geospatial skills course at college level. Representatives from The Scottish Government, Esri, Ordnance Survey and the British Geological Society attended, and it was a great opportunity to learn first-hand about how the industry is evolving to encourage new talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-next-generation-of-geospatial\">The next generation of geospatial<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>LDS used the event to present their geospatial skills roadmap, followed by a roundtable session to gather feedback from attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The roadmap is broken down into the categories of engagement, communication and practical actions, each of which contain clear short-, medium- and long-term objectives to support future geospatial skills requirements in Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These actions include integration of GIS into the secondary school curriculum; raising awareness of GIS as a career option for both those of school-age and considering a career change; and being consistent in the naming of the sector (are we GIS, or geospatial, or spatial data science?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is valuable because it demonstrates the commitment of LDS and its representatives to preparing the next generation of geospatial specialists, ready to meet industry needs and unlock the value of spatial data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1167\" height=\"643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16490\" style=\"width:751px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559.png 1167w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-768x423.png 768w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-1024x564.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-474x261.png 474w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-198x108.png 198w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-800x441.png 800w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-180x99.png 180w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-153x84.png 153w, https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2024\/07\/screenshot-2024-07-01-142559-230x127.png 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1167px) 100vw, 1167px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The second half of the event comprised a group discussion about the roadmap and skills pathways. We considered how to prioritise the actions within the roadmap, how the organisations participating in LDS can engage with education, and what geospatial skills the industry considers to be essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the key outcomes and suggestions revolved around the importance of visualisation and story telling alongside coding skills, and offering GIS as a career for those who display an aptitude for problem solving and analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-systra-s-role-in-supporting-future-skills\">SYSTRA\u2019s role in supporting future skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For SYSTRA, involvement in LDS and related communities such as the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) Scotland presents an opportunity to influence the development and actioning of the geospatial skills roadmap from an industry perspective, ensuring our future skills needs will be met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These events are also good opportunities for networking and promoting SYSTRA\u2019s presence in the GIS space; we will soon be recorded on the LDS Directory, which will allow us to find customers, suppliers, funding sources and partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, connecting with relevant educational institutions could lead to opportunities for future students to gain work experience with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>SYSTRA has a growing geospatial capability which is applicable to all sectors; everything happens somewhere.
