# Tunnel Euralpin Lyon-Turin – France / Italy

**SYSTRA is one of the main engineering companies working on the Lyon-Turin base tunnel project, set to become the longest rail tunnel in the world. The Group is currently mobilised on the construction of more than half the tunnel, on both sides of the Alps.**

In order to reduce pollution due to road traffic and increase rail links between
France and italy, the two countries committed to building a new base tunnel,
located at the foot of the Alps, to link Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Suse. 57.5km
long, this new structure will be the longest of its kind in the world. It will
enable the opening of a new rapid link between Lyon and Turin, and cut journey
times from 3h43 to 1h47.

By 2030, more than 4.5 million passengers per year could be using this line. But
before that, the impossible must be achieved: build a twin-tube tunnel under a
mountain with a particular geological complexity, at depths almost always more
than 2,000 metres.

SYSTRA carried out the initial studies for this structure from 2002, before
doing the traffic and socioeconomic studies for the project. Today, the Group is
working on the project management of almost 60% of the tunnel’s length:

- Within the S2IP consortium led by Setec for the civil engineering of Lot 2;
- Within the IS2P consortium led by Italferr with our Italian subsidiary
  SYSTRA-SOTECNI for the civil engineering of Lots 3/4, covering the Italian
  entry to the tunnel.

In addition to these contracts, SYSTRA is responsible for other strategic
assignments:

- Track modernisation of the future international station of
  Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, the French entry point of the new tunnel;
- Supervision of land acquisitions for the part of the site situated in France;
- Supervision of maintenance and enlargement works of the ‘La Maddalena’ base
  site situated in Italy.
