**Role**: Civil Engineering Apprentice

**Career Area**: Engineering Design

**Current Study Level**: Degree Apprenticeship

**Location**: York

###### My role at SYSTRA

As a Civil Engineering Apprentice, I am actively engaged in the Modular
Platforms team, where my primary responsibilities involve the development of
compliant 3D models and drawings for platform extensions using a modular system.

My role necessitates a methodical approach to ensure that the designs adhere to
regulatory standards and specifications.

I am committed to delivering high quality and technically sound solutions that
contribute to the seamless integration of modular platforms within our projects.

#### Why I chose a degree apprenticeship

Embarking on my journey in construction was marked by the completion of my Level
3 course in Constructing the Built Environment, a pivotal moment that fuelled my
passion for understanding structural complexities. Determined to learn more
about this field, I spoke with a career development specialist, who convinced me
to pursue an apprenticeship in civil engineering.

The choice to pursue an apprenticeship was deeply rooted in my appreciation for
hands-on learning, where practical experience intertwines seamlessly with
theoretical knowledge.

###### We asked Agata…

###### How have your technical skills developed throughout your apprenticeship?

At the beginning of my apprenticeship, my knowledge was limited to basic
construction concepts, and I had no prior understanding of railway systems.
Throughout the apprenticeship, I was able to enhance my comprehension of railway
infrastructure significantly. Additionally, I acquired the necessary CAD skills
to proficiently convey and present design concepts through models and drawings.

The apprenticeship also provided me with the opportunity to attain professional
accreditation, marking a significant and commendable achievement in my career
development.

###### How have you grown personally through doing an apprenticeship?

Doing this apprenticeship has really been my first steps into the realm of
adulthood, providing me with insights into diverse perspectives and effective
conflict resolution strategies. I find a lot of value in networking, as it
allows me to delve deeper into the industry and expand my knowledge.

###### What advice would you offer to someone who’s unsure if an apprenticeship is right for them?

I recommend conducting comprehensive research on both the industry and potential
companies. Additionally, reaching out to individuals currently engaged in the
specific apprenticeship you are interested in can provide valuable insight and
guidance.

###### How does SYSTRA stand out as a great place to work?

There are numerous opportunities for engagement, including participation in
volunteering activities or involvement in STEM events.

###### What’s your favourite thing about your job right now?

Participating in networking events.

###### Diversity is powerful. What unique perspective do you offer as an apprentice?

As a young professional in the industry, I bring a fresh perspective that drives
me to innovate and question existing practices, with the goal of enhancing and
evolving our ways of working.

###### What would an entirely green future look like? How should our industry contribute?

A fully green future involves a railway industry that embraces renewable energy,
electrification and sustainable materials. By prioritising these eco-friendly
practices, the industry can significantly contribute to reducing its
environmental footprint, promoting a cleaner, greener future.

###### You can spend your lunchbreak with anyone you admire – who would you choose?

I would choose Zaha Hadid. Her innovative and stunning architectural designs
have always inspired me, and I would relish the chance to gain insight into her
creative process and vision.

###### What is your next big career goal?

Shifting my focus toward a career in structural engineering.

###### What excites you about your career future?

The opportunity to contribute to the creation of sustainable and resilient
infrastructure within civil or structural engineering. I am enthusiastic about
tackling complex challenges, designing innovative solutions, and playing a role
in shaping the built environment for the better. Additionally, the prospect of
continuous learning and staying at the forefront of technological advancements
in the field, is something that I find particularly thrilling.
