{"id":31731,"date":"2025-08-14T12:44:18","date_gmt":"2025-08-14T11:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/ireland\/?p=31731"},"modified":"2025-08-14T12:44:19","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T11:44:19","slug":"systra-designed-river-cole-realignment-completed-on-hs2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/ireland\/news\/systra-designed-river-cole-realignment-completed-on-hs2\/","title":{"rendered":"SYSTRA-designed River Cole realignment completed on HS2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The 749-metre realignment of the River Cole near Coleshill in Warwickshire is the most significant scheme of its kind on the project, and was needed as part of the Delta Junction works, where two new viaducts and a series of railway embankments are being constructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/08\/resized-river-cole-viaduct-and-river-realignment.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45836\" style=\"width:700px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">River Cole Viaduct and river realignment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The re-naturalisation will improve the existing river environment by creating more<s> <\/s>meander bends and enhancing habitats in the river and along its banks to maximise biodiversity, and has also seen the creation of new public green spaces and paths alongside the river to enhance community access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The realignment was designed by the Mott MacDonald SYSTRA DJV and delivered by ecologists and engineers working for HS2\u2019s construction partner Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV). With construction of the river realignment now complete, the teams will focus on completing the surrounding embankments and viaducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.systra.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/08\/resized-cgi-of-river-cole-viaducts.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45835\" style=\"width:700px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">CGI of River Cole Viaducts<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During the development of the design in this area, HS2 Ltd, Balfour Beatty VINCI, and the Mott MacDonald SYSTRA DJV worked closely with the Environment Agency, local community, Independent Design Panel, Warwickshire County Council and North Warwickshire Borough Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The community has been particularly involved in ideas for high-quality pathways for better connectivity, with the design aiming to revive the area&#8217;s recreational aspect through the development of public green spaces and paths alongside the river.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Excavation works were completed in 2024 and temporary dams were then removed, allowing the water to flow into the new river section. The two River Cole viaducts, which span the river, are due to be completed later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Find
