**National Highway 54 (NH – 54):Package  4 & Package  5 in the State of Mizoram is intended to provide “last mile connectivity” to the remotest corners of the country of India. The development of the National Highway – 54 in difficult mountainous terrain will contribute largely to the economic development of the hitherto remote areas and will also provide strategic defense infrastructure.**

The state of Mizoram is one of the “Seven Sister” states of the North-East
India, endowed with vast treasure of flora and fauna. It is a border state with
the country of Myanmar and hence have significant strategic importance. The NH –
54 is the lifeline of the state connecting it to the rest of the country and the
project is aimed at capacity augmentation of the existing highway from Aizawl
(capital City of the state) to Tuipang, the last town near Indo/Myanmar border.

## Key features of the project

- Geometric Improvement to cater for Design Speed of 30 km/hr. The existing
  geometry of the project road is compliant to 10-15 km/hr Design Speed and thus
  the improved Project Road will augment the road operation and road safety to
  substantial limits
- Capacity Augmentation to 2 Lane with Paved Shoulder ​
- Significant length of earth retaining structures both in hill and valley side
  to ensure sustainable all-weather road​
- Specialized Slope protection and safety measures like Rockfall Prevention
  System with Soil/Rock Anchors, etc. to ensure slope stability in highly
  vulnerable “Lushai Hills” of Mizoram, consisting of highly fractured and young
   sedimentary rocks
- Adequate Surface and sub–Surface Drainage system  

## Sustainability

The following sustainable solutions were provided in the project:

- Reuse of Hill cut materials in pavement construction and Gabion Wall
  construction​
- Optimisation of road vertical profile to achieve cut-fill balance as much as
  practicable​
- 34 Spoil Banks for disposal of 36,13,464 cum. of hill cut material ​
