# DETAILED DESIGN FOR PACKAGE 2 – NAGPUR-MUMBAI SUPER COMMUNICATION EXPRESSWAY PROJECT – MAHARASHTRA

![DETAILED DESIGN FOR PACKAGE 2 – NAGPUR-MUMBAI SUPER COMMUNICATION EXPRESSWAY PROJECT – MAHARASHTRA](https://www.systra.com/india/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2022/11/thumbnail_2.png)

**The Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway or Nagpur–Mumbai Super Communication Expressway (officially known as Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg) is an under-construction 6-lane wide (expandable to 8), 701 km long access-controlled expressway in the state of Maharashtra, India.**

SYSTRA completed the detailed design work for the Package 2 of the Access
Controlled Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway Project, located in the
state of Maharashtra. The Expressway connects the capital city of Mumbai to the
city of  Nagpur, which is the third largest city and the winter capital of the
state.

## Key features of the project

- 58.41 km long Six lane access control expressway with 150kmph Design Speed
- Total 153 major and minor structures on this project section. Few important
  structures are
- Viaduct with 80m span Bow String Steel Girder over existing State highway and
  river
- Major bridge of 315m total length with 3 & 4 span deck continuity for 31.50m
span length and average 30m height of Piers
- India’s 1st Wildlife Overpasses with span arrangement of 2×20.60m + 2×31.05m,
overall width 45m and average 30m height of portal type piers
- Elevated Rotary at Interchange with deck continuity

## Value Engineering

As a part of Value Engineering exercise and to optimise material requirements,
the team made a detailed comparison of Tender vs. Detailed Design quantities for
each type of material used in the design phase. Substantial optimization of
cutting slopes was proposed in design to reduce overall construction footprint.
As a result of this exercise, materials optimisation was achieved up to 8.5% on
the overall civil construction cost.

## ⏎ Sustainability

The expressway crosses a major ecological zone in which the Wildlife Institute
of India has identified Wildlife Focus Areas (WFA). A big effort is being made
in this direction to ensure that the project is a model for wildlife protection
and conservation. As a part of this initiative, additional wildlife overpasses
and underpasses were proposed, allowing safe passage for animals to minimise the
disruption.  The project also includes a huge tree planting programme along its
length.

## Recognition󠀁****󠁿

SYSTRA team received a recognition award from the client for their exemplary
services in the design and support during execution.
