Designing buildings is also part of SYSTRA’s portfolio of activities. In Turkey, we have just completed studies for two medical faculties in Istanbul.

Our Turkish teams have handed over the detailed design studies for the Çapa and Cerrahpaşa University Research Hospital Campuses in Istanbul by SYSTRA and RPA Srl. In total, the surface area of these two campuses, which will bring together a university research hospital and a medical faculty, is almost one million square metres.

Sustainable buildings in a complex environment

These projects are part of a programme to transform the city in the historic Golden Horn peninsula. They raise issues of archaeological preservation in a seismic zone. One of the challenges will also be compliance with the principles of LEED* Gold certification, which guarantees the construction of sustainable and environmentally friendly buildings.

SYSTRA has been involved in preliminary studies for other university hospitals in Istanbul as well, such as the Hasdal Medical School Campus and the Sultangazi Vocational School.

The difficulty of these projects was the integration of new and historical buildings in highly seismic zones. In addition, construction phases had to be studied while keeping the operation of existing facilities. Once built, these hospital campuses will contribute to the improvement of the country’s entire medical system.
