SYSTRA was chosen for the Surat Metro Rail Project Phase 1 in India on behalf of its well-established client the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL).

The project is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD) and the German development bank KfW. SYSTRA Group is the Lead Partner of the joint venture with EGIS Rail SA and AECOM Asia Company Limited. It is scheduled to last for 42 months.

Scope of services

The services provided by SYSTRA’s teams in India will cover Review of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), Design review, Procurement Assistance for Civil and System works, Construction Supervision for Civil & System Works, System Integration, Overall Project Management, Safety & Quality Check, and Testing & Commissioning.

SYSTRA is also successfully executing a GEC contract for Ahmedabad Metro Phase I for GMRCL, inaugurated in March 2019.

This project started in 2015 and completion is expected in 2022.

Surat: a city on the move

The city of Surat, with a population of around 7 million, is in the state of Gujarat and is one of the largest cities in western India.

It is famous for its diamond cutting and polishing it is known as the ‘Diamond City of India’.

According to a report by the World Economic Forum, it is the fastest growing city in the world in terms of GDP thanks to a high level of infrastructure investment, especially in the development of sustainable transport solutions.

Key features – Surat Metro Rail Project Phase I

  • Two corridors with a combined length of 40.35km and a total of 38 stations
    • Corridor 1: Sarthana to Dream City with 6 underground and 14 elevated stations
    • Corridor 2: Bhesan to Saroli with 18 elevated stations
  • Design Speed: 90km/h
  • Maximum operating speed: 80km/h
  • Traction & Power Supply: 750 V DC, Third Rail Current Collection System
  • Signalling: CATC (Continuous Automatic Train Control System) with cab signalling and ATO (Automatic Train Operation), and ATS (Automatic Train Supervision) sub-systems using radio communication between Track side and Train.
  • Telecommunication & Train Control: Integrated system with Fibre Optic Cable, SCADA, Train Radio, PA System, etc.
  • Automatic fare collection (AFC) system with Smart Cards & Platform Screen Doors
  • Rolling Stock: 3 coach units, 2.90m wide
