SYSTRA has been awarded a new contract in India to update the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Chennai Metropolitan Area in India.

With over 15 million inhabitants, Chennai is the main economic hub of southern India and the fourth most populous metropolitan region in the country. The surrounding suburbs of Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur will soon be included in its metropolitan area. And it is SYSTRA’s teams in India and France who will be updating the mobility plan for the metropolis on behalf of the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA).

Sustainability at the heart of a growth strategy

The aim of the project is to present a long-term vision of mobility in the entire Chennai metropolitan area, covering all modes of transport and focusing on the movement of people rather than vehicles.

The mobility plan will focus more on the resilience, inclusivity, and green mobility for the future of the Chennai Regions mobility framework and for this, SYSTRA shall be adopting sustainable mobility principles that have been prescribed by the World Bank as part of the GRIDS Framework (Green, Resilience, Inclusive, Effective Development, Safe) aiming for measurable improvements in adaptation and measurable reductions in emissions and focusing on data driven Mobility.

SYSTRA: a decisive role in the metro network

SYSTRA has been involved in the creation of a metro network in Chennai since 2015 for phase 1 as Detailed Design Consultant for the line’s extension, and since 2021 for phase 2.

The arrival of the metro has helped to make travel more fluid and offers the people of Chennai a safe, reliable, economical, and sustainable mobility service, integrated with other transport networks such as buses and regional trains.

In terms of area, CMA is the third largest metropolitan region in the country after the Delhi NCR region and Mumbai Metropolitan Area. The city is 50% the size of the whole Paris region, and 70% the size of the London Metropolitan Area.
