Urban mobilities

SYSTRA is one of the key engineering firms to be designing the third metro line of the Greater Toulouse region. This urban structuring project is among the most ambitious undertaken in France, multiplying the public transport offer from east to west of the city.

Since 2016, SYSTRA has been preparing for the arrival of a third metro line in the city and its agglomeration. For our client Tisséo Ingénierie, the public transportation authority for the city of Toulouse, we have been mobilised on the project since the initial phases of the programme and will remain so until the commissioning of this new metro.

SYSTRA first carried out the preliminary technical studies defining the project’s framework using a BIM model which received a ‘BIM d’Argent’ award in 2017. We then led the consortiums working on three major assignments between 2018 and 2019:

  • Systems project management assistance (PMA), comprising all the line’s systems, stations, the maintenance site and the rolling stock;
  • Land acquisition assistance, representing more than 1,500 plots to be negotiated and acquired in order to free up the rights-of-way necessary for the construction of the metro;
  • The infrastructure project management of the project’s underground central section, the most technical of the line and representing 60% of the final route (15km).

This project, also called Toulouse Aerospace Express, is set to serve an urban area of more than a million inhabitants from east to west of the agglomeration. It will leverage local intermodality and shift car traffic towards public transport with an expected ridership of 200,000 passengers per day.

The line will link via 27km and 21 stations the main economic and urban hubs under development, the stations of Labège and Colomiers, as well as Toulouse – Blagnac airport via correspondence with the Aéroport Express tramway line for which our teams are carrying out the feasibility studies and preliminary design.

SYSTRA has been a partner of the Tououse authorities since 1985 with the creation of the first automatic metro line. More assignments followed in the 1990s and 2000s leading to the creation of a second automatic line. Our Group thus benefits from a strong local presence and a profound knowledge of transport systems in Toulouse.
