**In 2020, SYSTRA was selected to provide Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth city, with tramway expertise in order to analyse the relevance of the project and to define its integration into the landscape and its technological choices. Following this study, Trafikverket, the country’s transport infrastructure manager, confirmed the financing of the tramway, provided it could be put into service before 2030.**

### SYSTRA AS LEADER OF A COMPLETE PROJECT MANAGEMENT TEAM

Our Swedish teams were chosen as partners of Uppsala to supervise the
construction of this new tramway, from site planning to the monitoring of
construction work, including interfacing with all the local contractors selected
by the local authorities.

### LOOKING AHEAD TO 2029

The goal is to have the line in service by 2029. To achieve this, work will have
to start in 2025, which leaves less than three years to launch the contracts,
especially those for the execution studies. The 230,000 inhabitants will then
once again be able to benefit from a
[tramway network](https://www.systra.com/en/markets/light-rail/), the previous
one having been dismantled in 1953.

### FACILITATING MOBILITY AND ACCESS TO EMPLOYMENT

The route of the future line will serve most of the employment and residential
areas of Uppsala, connecting the two banks of the river Fyrisån.
