# Level Crossing Removal Project – Australia

**The Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) in Melbourne, Australia is a major transformation programme that aims to remove 75 level crossings in the city by 2025 in order to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in Australia’s second largest city.**

To carry out the LXRP project, a tool had to be developed for the local
government and the transport operator (Metro Trains Melbourne, MTM) to improve
the operation of replacement buses during the works and limit the associated
costs.

To this end, the State of Victoria organised a hackathon in 2019, an event
during which groups of volunteer developers, graphic designers, interface
designers and project managers come together for a given period to work on
projects with the aim of creating a functional product at the end of the event.

### CUTTING-EDGE DIGITAL COLLABORATION

SYSTRA, in collaboration with the global IT consultancy VISEO, created in just a
few days an application that calibrates the number of buses, people carried and
people in stations, with the aim of guiding users and adjusting bus frequency
and journey times. Feedback from ItSim by Qeto, another SYSTRA digital solution,
helped speed up the development of the tool.

To date, the application has helped the Victorian Government successfully manage
the impact of disruption caused to commuters in the city of Melbourne by the
removal of 46 of the 75 level crossings.

### AWARDED FOR INNOVATION

The application received the Highly Commended award in the Data Leadership
category at the 3rd annual Smart Cities Awards in December 2020.
