**Taranto station, in Southern Italy, is being transformed into a more accessible, connected and sustainable multimodal hub, bringing together rail services, the city’s developing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network, local bus services, active travel and a new park-and-ride facility. SYSTRA carried out the design studies on behalf of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) as part of the wider redevelopment, whose phased construction began in December 2024 and is scheduled for completion during 2027.**

### A connected and accessible interchange

The project will create a second station frontage on the Croce side, linked to
the Croce Terminal bus station and a new interchange car park. A new passenger
building will complement the existing station, while the forecourt and
surrounding road network will be reorganised to improve rail, bus, pedestrian
and cycle connections. The scheme also includes a pedestrian underpass,
landscaped public spaces, energy-efficient lighting, raised bus boarding
platforms and expanded cycling provision. Accessibility improvements include new
lifts, raised platforms and tactile guidance routes, with the station remaining
operational throughout the phased works.

### Environmental performance embedded in design

RFI has set high sustainability targets for the project. The design and
construction are being assessed against four complementary environmental rating
and compliance frameworks:

- **LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)**, the green building
  rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, using a framework
  tailored to transit stations;
- **The Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Framework**, a rating and
  verification system for civil infrastructure projects;
- **The Do No Significant Harm (DNSH) principle**, requiring projects supported
  under European funding frameworks to avoid significant harm to environmental
  objectives;
- Italy’s **Criteri Ambientali Minimi (CAM)**, the minimum environmental
  criteria applied to public procurement and infrastructure projects.

The redevelopment is being carried out entirely in BIM. Its sustainability
strategy addresses efficient land use, the protection of water resources and
local hydrology, landscaping to reduce visual impacts, and the reduction of
construction waste. These priorities have particular significance in Taranto, a
city facing longstanding environmental and public-health pressures associated
with heavy industry.
