# Taiwan High Speed Railway Line – Taiwan

**Taiwan High Speed Railway (HSR) links the country’s two largest cities, Taipei in the north and Kaohsiung in the south, covering a distance of 345km and crossing the western corridor of the island where three quarters of the population is located. The line was put into service at the beginning of 2007.**

### PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT

SYSTRA has been deeply involved in the project from the very beginning of
planning up to the operation and played various roles through different project
stages.

Between 1990 and 1999, for the government authorities responsible for the
project, SYSTRA was in charge of:

- planning and feasibility studies
- functional specifications of the high-speed system
- alignment and civil engineering basic design
- financial and institutional surveys
- preparation of contractor tender documents
- detailed design review

Since 1999, on behalf of Taiwan High Speed Railway Corp., SYSTRA’s
responsibilities were:

- provision of technical expertise and assistance for civil works
- design, system specifications, operation planning and construction
- Independent Checking Engineer and Independent Site Engineer (ICE/ISE) as
  member of International Railway Engineering Group (IREG)
- assistance and support to operation and maintenance preparation and start-up

### CONTRIBUTING TO A REDUCTION IN POLLUTION

The Taiwan HSR is the largest public transport project ever undertaken on the
island. It helps relieve congestion on the roads and reduces air pollution. The
project has also enabled the transfer of sophisticated technology and know-how,
thereby contributing to the economic, industrial and scientific development of
the country.
