SYSTRA analysed and assessed the impact of the launch of NaviGoGo, a new web application for youth travel in the UK. Commissioned by the British government, the app was developed to encourage young people to use various modes of transport for their daily journeys.

The trial took place between 2016 and 2018 in the Dundee and North Fife regions of Scotland. Using the NaviGoGo app, young people aged 16 to 25 could find, book and pay for the fastest and cheapest mode of transport.

Overview of the NaviGoGo mobile app interface

The service was designed by a consortium led by ESP Group, composed of Mudlark, National Entitlement Card (NEC), Route Monkey, Young Scot travel card and SYSTRA.

SYSTRA’s task was to evaluate the NaviGoGo service using surveys and focus groups. Participants were asked how their attitudes and habits had changed in order to find out:

  • what they thought about the service,
  • what impact the service had on their journeys,
  • how the service could be improved.

The trial was a success, since 39% of young people said that the route calculator had had an impact on their daily journeys. SYSTRA’s study showed that the NaviGoGo service had helped to boost transport confidence and had encouraged young people to travel more.
