# Lyon LRT Network – France

![Lyon LRT Network – France](https://www.systra.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/lyon-tram.jpeg)

**After preliminary studies in 1998 for the creation of the first lines of the network, our first project management assignment dates back to 2005. Since then, there has been a succession of projects:**

• T4 phase 1 between Lyon Part-Dieu station and Vénissieux (2005-2009)
• T2 extensions: towards Eurexpo (2009-2013) and towards Rond-Point René Cassin
(2012-2017)• T3 extension towards the Grand Stade (2009-2014)• T4 phase 2 up to
IUT Feyssine (2008-2013)• T6 South between Debourg and Hôpitaux-Est (2015-2019)

### NUMEROUS TECHNICAL CHALENGES

[The development of the tramway](https://www.systra.com/en/markets/light-rail/)
in the Lyon metropolitan area is continues with the creation of the T10 line,
for which SYSTRA was awarded the project management in 2021. is the first
project on which the principles and indicators of SYSTRA’s Framework for
Sustainable Design & Construction are being tested in practice.

The project involves numerous technical challenges, such as crossing the wide
track of the Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée (PLM) line or building the future train
maintenance centre in a dense urban context and within a very strict timeframe.

Once the T10 line is complete, no community in the inner suburbs of Lyon will be
without tramway or metro services.

### A SUSTAINABLY DESIGNED TRAMWAY

Three sustainable initiatives were taken for the T10 tramway in Lyon,
**the first project on which the principles and indicators of SYSTRA’s Framework for Sustainable Design & Construction are being tested in practice**
:

• Some grassed tram routes still use a concrete bed under the grass. There’s
nothing under T10’s grass except for a concrete ladder to give support. It
requires less concrete – an instant carbon saving – but also allows water to
drain more easily.
• Tree planting has featured heavily in the design but not only to replace what
might have been lost during construction. Strategically placed trees will create
biodiversity and shade.• Finally, the Saint-Fons maintenance centre uses solar
thermal energy to supply its domestic hot water, and produces its own
electricity via photovoltaic solar panels.
