# Gatwick Airport Station – United Kingdom

**Gatwick Airport (LGW) is London’s second busiest airport with over 45 million passengers a year. The airport has two terminals where 90 airlines serve over 200 destinations.**

In 2016, SYSTRA was appointed by construction company Costain to lead the
architecture, design, and engineering of the much-needed improvements for
Gatwick Airport Station. SYSTRA’s architecture team managed the station design
from early concept through its formal planning approval and final detailed
design. Construction on the new concourse began in November 2020. The
refurbished station opened in 2023.

### MEETING CLIENT EXPECTATIONS

Our SYSTRA experts spearheaded the project’s success, ultimately achieving the
three key requirements for the transformed station requested by Network Rail,
the company that owns and develops Britain’s railway infrastructure:

- Improving safety
- Increasing capacity
- Improving the passenger experience

### SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

With rigorous environmental consideration from the design stage, we made sure
that materials used in the construction would reduce the projects carbon impact.
LED lighting was used throughout the station including in lifts and permanent
installations. The escalators were fitted with reduced speed technology and high
efficiency gearless lifts were installed. A hybrid heating and cooling system
was installed too. By 2023 the project had used almost 3,000m3 of low-carbon
concrete for construction, saving 517 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

### CONSULTATION: A KEY PROJECT COMPONENT

A rigorous stakeholder engagement process, including a series of stakeholder
workshops, was established alongside the development of the concept design,
ensuring each were aligned and continuously challenged. This guaranteed that the
proposal would meet all the client’s aspirations and requirements, and most
importantly allowed plenty of opportunity to discuss and continually review the
design.
