# Cityringen metro, Copenhagen – Denmark

![Cityringen metro, Copenhagen – Denmark](https://www.systra.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/cityringen-1-scaled.jpg)

**In 2019, Copenhagen celebrated the arrival of Cityringen, a new circle line designed to serve the city. SYSTRA began participating in the project in 2007.**

Fully automated and driverless and forms a ring inside the city centre with a
length of 15.5km and 17 stations 100% underground. It is interconnected with the
existing transport networks and notably with the other two automatic lines, the
central station and regional rail networks.

### A LONG-TERM PROJECT

For more than a decade, SYSTRA worked on this project as part of a joint-venture
(JV) with COWI and Arup. We contributed to the design in 2007 and to the entire
tendering phase right up to the evaluation of the Civil Works for Tunnel,
Stations, Mechanical and Electrical works, and Architectural Finishes. Then we
were involved in the Interfaces coordination and document management processes
before participating in the detailed design review. Finally, we supervised the
construction and the follow–up of non-conformities.

### A MASSIVE INFRASTRUCUTRE PROJECT

The new line follows the architectural principles that have contributed to the
success of the first two lines, namely easy access from street level to the
concourse and platforms by means of a spacious atrium illuminated with natural
daylight via geometrical skylights.

### ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES MET BY SYSTRA

Cityringen is the perfect example of a sustainable mobility project with a
positive impact on the quality of life of the inhabitants of Copenhagen and on
local transport services. It is illustrated by the scale of the challenges taken
up by SYSTRA’s teams, from the attention paid to preserving and protecting the
historic buildings above certain stations, to controlling the water table,
reinforcing the foundations of above-ground buildings and excavating in a mixed
subsoil.
