# Baraje-Rubyiro Suspension Trailbridge – Rwanda

![Baraje-Rubyiro Suspension Trailbridge – Rwanda](https://www.systra.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/systra-bridges-to-prosperity-2024-baraje-rubyiro-bridge-1.jpg)

**In 2024 in Rwanda, a team of SYSTRA employees built a solidarity bridge for the NGO Bridges to Prosperity. This suspension bridge enables the inhabitants to cross the Rubyiro river, which is subject to high flooding, and gives them access to essential healthcare and services.**

The Baraje – Rubyiro bridge, 68 metres long, crosses the bed of this lowland
river. It replaces a previous concrete structure that collapsed, hampering the
mobility of more than 6,600 inhabitants and schoolchildren in this region, one
of the southernmost in Rwanda.

Unlike the north, which is characterised by a hilly landscape, the south is
flat, but the risk of flooding remains the same, with sudden rises in the river,
which the inhabitants cross on foot or by motorbike.

### 15 days to build a solidarity bridge

The Baraje – Rubyiro bridge, built in partnership with the independent
non-governmental organisation Bridges to Prosperity, was built with the help of
a team of 10 SYSTRA employees of 9 different nationalities.

From erecting the scaffolding and the 9.5-metre-high pylons on either side of
the river to creating the decking1, including assembling all the prefabricated
elements and tensioning the supporting cables, our team was involved at every
stage alongside local workers.

The bridge, made entirely of steel, has a 25-year guarantee, and its maintenance
is carried out by the Rwandan workers who took part in its construction. After
its construction, a 30% increase in the annual income of local residents was
recorded, as well as improved access to schools for almost 2,500 children and
maternity facilities for almost 700 women.

This is the third solidarity bridge built by SYSTRA in Rwanda, following those
in Shyagari, built in 2022, and Rusumo in 2023.
