# Ahmedabad Metro – India

**The Ahmedabad Metro, also called MEGA, is one of the most strategic transport infrastructure projects in the state of Gujarat.**

This metro serves the cities of Ahmedabad, with 7.2 million inhabitants, and
Gandhinagar, capital of the state of Gujarat with 1.3 million inhabitants,
situated 27km apart.

### A MAJOR REFERENCE FOR SYSTRA

Between 2015 and 2019, SYSTRA led a consortium comprising AECOM, Oriental
Consultants and RITES for a General Engineering Consultant (GEC) contract for
Phase 1 of the project.

A first section of the metro line running from east to west was inaugurated at
the beginning of 2019.

A second inauguration took place in 2022 marking the final stage of Phase 1 of
this unprecedented metro project, and the opening of one of the longest metro
sections in the country with a length of 32km.

The Indian authorities have already begun work on a second line running
north-south for which our teams were not selected and which should be
commissioned during 2024.

### STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY WITH SAFETY A PRIORITY

Some of the main features of this prestigious project are seamless connectivity,
minimum land acquisition and cutting-edge technology, especially where safety is
concerned, as was demonstrated in 2018 when the project received the Safety
Innovation Award from the Institution of Engineers (India).
