# Tunnel Euralpin Lyon-Turin – France / Italy

**SYSTRA is one of the main engineering companies working on the Lyon-Turin base tunnel project, set to become the longest rail tunnel in the world. The Group is currently mobilised on the construction of more than half the tunnel, on both sides of the Alps.**

## A PROJECT TO DECARBONISE TRANSPORT

In order to reduce pollution due to road traffic and increase rail links between
France and italy, the two countries committed to building a new base tunnel,
located at the foot of the Alps, to link Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Suse. 57.5km
long, this new structure will be the longest of its kind in the world. It will
enable the opening of a new rapid link between Lyon and Turin, and cut journey
times from 3h43 to 1h47.

By 2030, more than 4.5 million passengers per year could be using this line. But
before that, the impossible must be achieved: build a twin-tube tunnel under a
mountain with a particular geological complexity, at depths almost always more
than 2,000 metres.

## SYSTRA CONTRIBUTING FOR more than TWO DECADES

Our involvement in TELT dates back to 2002. On both the French and Italian
sides, our teams have carried out several studies and preparatory assignments,
including project management for the construction of the exploratory tunnel at
the ‘La Maddalena’ construction base in the Italian Alps.

With a central role in the construction of the TELT over the years, SYSTRA has
strengthened its presence on the project and is working as project manager for
more than 60% of the tunnel’s length, as part of three consortia:

- CO 6-7 (base tunnel on the French side), as part of the S2IP consortium
  (leader: Setec)
- CO 3-4 (base tunnel on the Italian side), as part of the Italferr consortium
  (leader: Italferr)
- CO1 and 2 (Interconnection of the tunnel and the Susa Plain in Italy)

The Group is also present on both sides of the tunnel accesses to prepare the
adaptation of tracks and the preparation of new international stations:

- Redevelopment of the Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne yard
- Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne International station
- Susa International station
- Supervision of land acquisitions on the French side of the site
- Supervision of maintenance and expansion work at the ‘La Maddalena’ site base
  at Chiomonte on the Italian side
- Carrying out studies for the implementation of a BIM method in conventional
  drilling on the CO 8 section at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne

The construction of the Lyon-Turin Euralpine Tunnel (TELT) passed several
crucial stages at the end of 2023: on the French side, the tunnel boring
machines were handed over, while on the Italian side, the contracts for the
excavation work were signed.
