The Shanghai metro: inauguration of the longest U-shaped viaduc line in the world
Line 16 of the Shanghai metro was inaugurated on 29th December.
The Shanghai metro network stretched to 567km with 331 stations following the inauguration of Line 12 on the same day.
The 59km Line 16 is the longest U-shaped viaduct line in the world.
SYSTRA Shanghai worked in collaboration with SYSTRA India, to provide:
- Assistance on the feasibility study
- Technical project assistance
- Construction designs and plans for the U-shaped viaducts for stations and interstations
- Works supervision
This project was SYSTRA’s first opportunity to use a new methodology for fitting “small U-shaped” pre-stressed concrete beams into the launching rail. Over 2 800 beams with spans of up to 35m were used on Line 16. It is also worth noting that Line 16 is the first metro line in the world to use a 3rd 1500V rail and that it is designed to handle trains travelling at 120 km/h.
SYSTRA also won a contract to provide technical assistance to the Owner on systems, which contributed to the successful commissioning of Line 16, originally known as the South Section of Line 11.
