SYSTRA was awarded a new contract for the extension of Light rail transit system in Casablanca
SYSTRA, in a joint venture with CID and AREP, won the project management contract for the construction of Casablanca’s LRT Line 2 and extension of Line 1, a network of 18km.
With a population of over 4 million, Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco and one of Africa’s five largest cities. All the parties agree that there is an urgent need to create a public transport network as public transport currently only meets 15% of urban travel requirements.
LRT Lines T2 and the extension of T1 are part of the Urban Transport Master Plan for the Casablanca region to provide better services in, around and out of the city. It will help to improve the urban environment in many ways, enhancing safety, public health, improving energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and relieving traffic congestion.
The services are due for commissioning within 39 months. This contract highlights the confidence that CASA Transport has in SYSTRA since it delivered the city’s first LRT line. Firstly, SYSTRA was awarded the project management contract for this 31km line, delivered within a record 30 months for commissioning in December 2012. Then again, SYSTRA was awarded the contract to update the Transport Master Plan for Casablanca and the production of preliminary designs for Line 2. The JV is responsible for full project management.
“We are both delighted and proud to have won this contract. It’s a major project, which will allow us to showcase SYSTRA’s extensive expertise in LRT. This project will allow us to consolidate our position in urban transport systems in Morocco and establish ourselves as the benchmark in engineering in North Africa” says Nicolas Kaeser, SVP Europe & Mediterranean at SYSTRA.
