SYSTRA’s new contract in Corsica: a sustainable success
SYSTRA has achieved a new success in Corsica with a contract to project manage a new train management system for the Chemins de Fer de la Corse (CFC) over a seven-year period. This mission follows on from a previous project, underway since 2011, and aims to meet increasing rail transport demands on the Isle of Beauty, where ridership has increased by more than 50% in five years.
A seven-year global mission
Facing a significant increase in the number of passengers using the Chemins de Fer de la Corse (CFC), SYSTRA was awarded the mission of building the insular network’s capacity through the implementation of centralised traffic management and the creation of passing track sections. This comprehensive mission will be extended over a seven-year period: the Group will project manage all stages of the work, from design to post-implementation support. Proprietor of the Isle of Beauty’s rail network, the Collectivité Territoriale de Corse (CTC) is project owner and will ensure the operational coordination of the work.
Currently limited to the suburb of Bastia, the rollout of the centralised traffic management system must allow for increased train availability, frequency and safety across the entire network. All of SYSTRA’s expertise will be applied: in the fields of operation, infrastructure, and particularly systems, as well as sustainable engineering for the production of administrative dossiers related to the environment and urbanism. The Group will also produce the complete safety dossier. The main challenge of this project is that the network will continue to operate while the work is underway.
Renewed confidence in SYSTRA
This contract is not the first for the Group in Corsica: it falls in line with a mission to increase network performance, initiated in 2011 by SYSTRA through the CTC. Beyond this mission, the success of previous projects undertaken on the island has built a lasting confidence between the Corsican authorities and the Group. Such projects led by SYSTRA have included track rehabilitation, monitoring construction on the maintenance depot at Casamozza, and several studies on passing speed, the implementation of a tram-train and the reopening of the Plaine Orientale line.
Exploding demand for transport
The Chemins de Fer de la Corse has seen great success: over 5 years, its ridership has increased by more than 50%. The context, then, is particularly favourable to public rail transport. The successful rollout of centralised traffic management is as vital for safety and management as it is necessary to meet this exploding demand.
