Cairo metro: SYSTRA named General Consultant for phase three of line 3
SYSTRA has won the contract to review detailed studies and supervise work on the third phase of construction of Cairo metro line 3. This new success extends an historic collaboration between SYSTRA and the metro of the Egyptian capital.
Cairo metro and SYSTRA, a long history
In 1970, Egypte assigned the design of the metro of Cairo to SYSTRA. In 2016, the long story of SYSTRA and the metro of Cairo extends on the project for phase three of line 3. Valued at approximately €60 million, the contract was signed in Cairo on 18 April 2016 between General Tarek G.E. Galal, President of the NAT (National Authority for Tunnels) and Mr Mahmoud Dow, Director of the Middle-East Region for SYSTRA, during the state visit of the president of France, Mr François Hollande.
Mahmoud Dow said: “This new contract is a further development in the long history between SYSTRA and the metro of Cairo. Since the drawing up of the Greater Cairo Transport Plan in 1970, SYSTRA has helped in the design of all three lines, representing more than 20 contracts. We are proud to work year after year, using our technical expertise and in-depth knowledge of the local environment to help enhance mobility services for the people of Cairo, a city that is expected to reach 23 million inhabitants by 2022”.
Facilitating the transport needs of 23 million Cairo citizens
The third line of the Cairo metro, which has a total length of 48 km, completes the existing transport offering by linking the airport with the northern part of the city as far as Rod El-Farad and the southern part as far as the university. It will have 39 stations, 30 of which will be under ground. This third phase, comprising 15 stations and almost 18 km in length, will link the two banks of the Nile and will extend to the west from Attaba, where the line will split in two, serving the north and the south. Most of it will be under ground (10 km), but a few sections will be over ground.
Having overseen all design work for line 3, SYSTRA has been awarded the contract to review the detailed studies and supervise work on phase 3 of the project. SYSTRA is the representative of a grouping that comprises Egis Rail and two Egyptian consultancy firms, ACE and EHAF. Specialising exclusively in guided transport, SYSTRA will draw on its vast expertise and experience for this complex project: deep underground work in order to cross the Nile, supervision of work on all systems from civil engineering through to electricity supply, signalling and rolling stock.
SYSTRA has already worked on the first two phases of the construction of line 3, supervising the work on phase 1, which began operation in February 2012, and phase 2, which opened to the public in May 2014.
