# Inauguration of the Riyadh automatic metro: SYSTRA a major actor in this ambitious project

Since August 2013, SYSTRA has been working alongside Parsons and Egis as part of
the integrated consortium Riyadh Metro Transit Consultants (RMTC) on behalf of
the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC). Our role as PMCM (Project
Management Construction Management) was to provide project management
assistance, design, project management and construction supervision for the
first three lines, Blue, Red and Orange. With the added challenge of
coordinating numerous construction sites in a particularly congested city,
SYSTRA mobilised almost 250 engineers on this project of unparalleled ambition:
to create in a decade the largest metro network to be commissioned in a single
phase.

This new metro, comprising six lines that will be brought into service almost
simultaneously, will considerably change the daily transport of Riyadh’s 7
million inhabitants: more than a million passengers are expected to use the
network every day, with 19 park-and-ride facilities built as close as possible
to key points to encourage a modal shift from the car to public transport.

The inauguration marked a historic day for Riyadh, which brings to life its
first automatic metro system, and for SYSTRA, whose teams have been working on
the project since August 2013. This is a major transformation for the Kingdom’s
capital city, which is acquiring one of the most modern metro networks in the
world. Through this project, we are very proud to be contributing to the
Kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030 and its transition towards more sustainable
mobility.

### SYSTRA at the service of a fast-growing capital city

Starting December 1, users of the first three opened lines will be able to use
nearly 60% of the final network, i.e. close to 100km of automatic driverless
lines serving 46 emblematic stations, with tracks integrated into the heart of a
fast-growing capital, in tunnels, viaducts, on the surface and in covered
trenches.

The six lines of the network will be opened progressively until 5 January 2025.
SYSTRA is already fully involved in the design of the extension to Line 2 and in
the preliminary studies, pre-qualification and monitoring of the calls for
tenders for the future Line 7.

Our engineers are also involved in many other projects, associated with the
Vision 2030 programme, which are transforming the Saudi metropolis:  

- Qiddiya Light Rail System, and Cable Car Transport Network, 
- King Abdullah Financial District Monorail,
- Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Stadium, being developed in support of upcoming
  tournaments, including Asian Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup,
- Modon Industrial Cities,
- Regeneration of Riyadh’s Historic City Centre.

### SYSTRA, a key player in all forms of mobility in Saudi Arabia

SYSTRA has been working with Saudi Arabia since 1987 to create transport
networks throughout the Kingdom, particularly in Riyadh, Jeddah, Medina and
Mecca. Having been involved in major metro, rail freight, planning and transport
consultancy projects, SYSTRA is now fully mobilised to meet the ambitions of the
Saudi government’s Vision 2030 development plan.

SYSTRA’s teams are currently working in Mecca on updating the feasibility study
for its metro system and building a Bus Rapid Transit system. They are also
contributing to the design of the future tramway in AlUla, a historic city in
the north-west of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. They are also carrying out
assignments for the Obhur multimodal bridge on the outskirts of Jeddah, for the
NEOM project, and for the construction of the North-South railway line,
dedicated to freight and passenger transport. Our teams have also signed a
long-term partnership with Saudi National Railways (SAR). SYSTRA’s major
contribution to these large-scale projects makes it a leading partner of the
Saudi authorities in the field of mobility and infrastructure.
