# First contract for SYSTRA on the Stockholm metro

![First contract for SYSTRA on the Stockholm metro](https://www.systra.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/gettyimages-521113391-scaled.jpg)

The aim of the Yellow line is to improve the metro network in the Swedish
capital, which is undergoing rapid growth. This complete new traffic system,
including rolling stock, will link the centre-west to the south of Stockholm,
between Älvsjö and Fridhemsplan, via six stations and an entirely underground
route. 48,500 new homes will be built close to the line, benefiting future
residents, while the line is expected to carry up to 75,000 passengers a day by
2050.

We will be supporting ‘Förvaltning för utbyggd tunnelbana’,  the organising
authority for the extension of the Stockholm metro, in the implementation of all
the systems for this new metro over a period of 3-4 years.

## A double first for SYSTRA and Stockholm

This line will be the first in Sweden to be driverless, with a GoA4\* automatic
driving system, the most advanced technology available. It will be equipped with
platform screen doors to ensure passenger safety and shorter trains (75m as
opposed to 145m on the rest of the network) with more frequent service to reduce
waiting times in stations.

This metro is also a first for SYSTRA: it is the first major metro contract to
be won in Stockholm, and what’s more for a complete systems project management
assignment. This firmly establishes the Group’s activity in Sweden as a major
presence in Scandinavia.

This contract covers a complete traffic system including rolling stock. The
strategy that SYSTRA has been pursuing in Sweden for the past three years has
been confirmed by this contract, which is a great opportunity to demonstrate our
expertise, particularly in automatic metro systems. We look forward to working
with our Swedish clients on this promising programme.

## An international team for an assignment with multiple challenges

The core coordination team will have the support of an international technical
team and key automation experts from the United States.

The assignment covers the design of the tender’s technical documentation, which
includes all technical specifications. Particular attention will be paid to
systems integration, interface management, design and implementation of the
operating system, as well as risk analysis and proposals for mitigation
measures.

To carry out this project, SYSTRA will draw in particular on feedback from
similar automation projects in Brussels and the construction of a new line in
Toulouse.

\*Grade of Automation, the scale for the level of automation on a metro, ranging
from 1 (driver-operated) to 4 (fully automatic without a driver).
